Largest of the marmot sloths and among the most heavily armored of sloths in Kaimere despite the fur coat, the taruul (Aspithorax ("shield chest") tarul) is a relic of a once more successful clade: while megathere sloths dominated megafaunal sloth niches during the Anchored Period, this genus was part of a clade once successful on both continents. The taruul however is the last of this clade, now restricted to the northern most of Arvel's southern highlands, having lost most of their range to the bear sloth now present in the southern steppes. Like other mylodonts, they are generalists who will eat any form of plant matter, though they do best on a variety of leaves and some grass. Their burrows are among the most impressive of any Kaimeran sloth, large enough for a person to walk through at least hunched over a little, yet small enough they can be more complex than those dug by hukolgur. Though they can be territorial at their den, taruul are not aggressive and are more likely to chase away than kill intruders.
