Among the sloths of Kaimere, the gopher sloths, descended from mylodontin sloths[1] such as Simomylodon,[2] are the most abundant and diverse clade of sloths. Of this clade, Marmorocnus ("Marmot sloth") is the most specious, with five species spread across the Known World discounting the few insular species in the Khalin Islands to the south. Most of these species are between three hundred and a thousand pounds and as with all other sloths in Kaimere boar are larger than sows, although their sexual dimorphism is not as extreme as larger sloth species. Marmot sloths are mixed feeders, browsing and grazing on a range of grasses and low leaves, though like many xenarthrans[3] in Kaimere have adapted to digest a lot more ferns, horsetails, and other gymnosperms than most mammal herbivores, a key to their success, and are surprisingly social: sows can live in groups of as many as thirty animals living in a region with intertwining burrows while boar are solitary and wander between these colonies. Variant: Giant Marmot slothThe giant marmot sloth is the species that reaches a thousand pounds and is the largest of the marmot sloths. A giant marmot sloth is a Large creature that has 22 (3d10+6) hit points and a CR of 1, but otherwise uses the same stats as a marmot sloth. |
