Tartaric Wizard[edit]

Normally people think of the title 'Wizard' as meaning someone who is not physically strong, but relies on magic to make up for that liability. A Tartaric Wizard wishes to defy that stereotype. Tartaric Wizards were often soldiers, mercenaries, or another type of warrior until they discovered the magic within themselves. They are made for war, rare as they are.

Making a Tartaric Wizard[edit]

Abilities: Strength is important to a Tartaric Wizard because it affects his ability to use a weapon. Constitution is important because it affects his resilience in combat. If a Tartaric Wizard lacks a Constitution of 18, then he cannot deserve the title of 'Tartaric' Wizard. A Tartaric Wizard's key ability for spellcasting is Intelligence or Charisma.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Tartaric Wizard.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Tartaric Wizard is proficient with all simple and martial weapons. A Tartaric Wizard is also proficient with all light and medium armor and shields. Wearing light or medium armor does not give the Tartaric Wizard an Arcane Spell Failure chance.

Spells: Every level a Tartaric Wizard gains counts as a level in another arcane spellcasting class for the purpose of determining spellcasting and special abilities, but for determining base attack bonus, saves, etc. Tartaric Wizards can cast their spells at will, without having to prepare them in any way. They may either use Intelligence or Charisma to cast their spells, this must be chosen at level one. Tartaric Wizards choose their spells from the Wizard/Sorcerer Spell List. They also get one bonus Evocation spell every two levels. That spell's level must not be higher than the highest level spell the Tartaric Wizard can cast. He can also cast bonus spells per day from the Wizard/Sorcerer Spell List (See "Bonus Spells per Day" Table above).

Favored Weapon: (Ex): At the first level a Tartaric Wizard may choose a weapon. This refers to the weapon in hand, not the entire type. This weapon's hardness doubles. The weapon also gives the wielder an innate feeling that allows him to dodge his enemies' blows, causing even the most powerful attacks to seem as though they glance off to the side. This gives you a DR (10+ con mod.)/- and a bonus to AC equal to your Intelligence or Charisma modifier.

Underworld Lightning: (Sp): At the second level and every three levels thereafter, a Tartaric Wizard can conjure lightning from the very depths of the underworld. This lightning is extremely dangerous, and cuts a void in light. The lightning shoots out in all directions from the caster for a 15 foot radius. This lightning deals 1d8 damage per level + charisma or intelligence modifier. No damage reduction or armor bonuses apply, although a reflex saving throw of 10 + Charisma or Intelligence modifier + 1/2 the Tartaric Wizard's Level for half damage. It damages everything including walls and objects, and more importantly enemies as well as allies. The underworld holds no mercy.

One with the Weapon: (Ex): At the sixth level a Tartaric Wizard starts to gain powerful skills with his favored weapon. Using it he can now fight much more skillfully. His newly found skills grant a +3 to attack and a +4 to damage when using his favored weapon.

Sense Motive: (Ex): At the sixth level a Tartaric Wizard is granted the Sense Motive skill. The Tartaric Wizard gains a +8 to Sense Motive's Misc. Modifier.

Sense Magic: (Sp): At the eighth level a Tartaric Wizard gains the ability to detect if something has magic within, granting him continuous passive use of the arcane sight spell

Dance with Death: (Su): At the ninth level a Tartaric Wizard becomes able to sense enemies' attacks, and to strike back with added precision. This ability grants a +5 Dexterity bonus to his ability score and a +4 to his attack bonus with his favored weapon.

Soul Weapon: (Su): At the 10th level the Tartaric Wizard receives his most powerful ability. He fuses part of his soul into his favored weapon, along with the souls of anyone it kills. This gives the weapon the ability to shoot chain lightning twice a day as a 15th level spell caster. The weapon also gains a +2 to attack and a +4 to damage. The weapon is now treated as a magic item, but only the Tartaric Wizard can take advantage of its new abilities. The weapon is now unbreakable.

Channel Underworld Lightning: (Sp): At the 10th level a Tartaric Wizard can empower his weapon with lightning from the depths of the underworld a number of times per day equal to his Constitution ability score. This lightning deals double the damage of regular Underworld Lightning.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Tartaric Wizard[edit]

Religion: The Tartaric Wizard will follow any religion reflecting his alignment.

Other Classes: The Tartaric Wizard respects all people to an extent. The Fighter, the Wizard, and the Sorcerer are classes that the Tartaric Wizard enjoys the company of, seeing as they share similar interests.

Combat: A Tartaric Wizard can have a variety of role in combat. His talents allow him to be an aggressive attacker in multiple ways, but whether he chooses to use his powerful martial skills or his destructive magic abilities, depends on what gaps his party needs filled in.

Tartaric Wizards in the World[edit]

"You seek a Tartaric Wizard? Google it. You'll have better luck with that than to ask me where to find one."

Byraer Vaslaeranu, Battlemage and Tartaric Wizard.

Daily Life: Notables: Not many Tartaric Wizards exist, since most wanting to merge the respective arts of spellcasting and martial prowess seek to become Eldritch Knights. Two prominent Tartaric Wizards are the Edesil Elf Byraer Vaslaeranu and the Dracotaur Jay-Pahz Fam.

Organizations: There are probably no organizations comprised of just Tartaric Wizards, since they are a rare breed of spellcasters.

NPC Reactions: NPCs typically don't know what a Tartaric Wizard is, seeing as they are so scarce. That, and the fact that Tartaric Wizards sometimes don't want to be known as such by the general public, due to the ominous name, make people think that they are either some kind of warrior or mage, or maybe even both. Many times they are confused with Eldritch Knights, due to the similarities in vocation. Some knowledgeable travelers may recognize the skills of the Tartaric Wizard, but finding such a traveler is as hard as it is to find a Tartaric Wizard.

Tartaric Wizard Lore[edit]

Characters with the Knowledge(Arcana) skill can research Tartaric Wizards to learn more about them. Include all information less than or equal to the player's roll after adding all relevant modifiers.

DC Result
5 Tartaric Wizards are very scarce in this world The character could possibly seek out Byraer Vaslaeranu or Jay-Pahz Fam, both traveling Tartaric Wizards who pop up in large towns regularly.
10 Tartaric Wizards are similar to Eldritch Knights in that both classes use magic and physical power in their respective vocations.
15 Tartaric Wizards have some kind of connection to the underworld, although they aren't always evil.
20 Tartaric Wizards can utilize a certain magical ability that lets them cast lightning from the underworld.

Tartaric Wizards in the Game[edit]

A Tartaric Wizard is typically an adventurer who yearns for new knowledge of the world and of magic.

Sample Encounter: A party might run across a Tartaric Wizard when on any road, and that Tartaric Wizard is likely to assist them in anything they need. He then would continue on his way, with or without the previously mentioned party. Tartaric Wizards are likely to travel with any kind of people, as long as they don't impair the accomplishment of his own personal goals.
