Two questions what is meant by "tick" and for Mounted Punches is it you roll a d6 , get a 4 and you make 4 unarmed strikes attacks and then roll damage if they hit or you roll 4 unarmed strikes that auto hit?

  • Thanks for the questions--hopefully these will clarify!
    • 1) A "Tick" is essentially the continued, sustained damage from the damage-over-time techniques like the Submission Holds. If you've every played video game RPG's or MMO's, they're effectively taken from the individual "damage ticks" from DoTs. For example, if you successfully lock someone into an Armbar or a Figure Four, you can use your Action to continue dealing the maneuver's damage without having to roll an Attack roll or Grapple check. You can keep doing so until either you release the hold, your opponent breaks the hold (rolls higher in a contested Grapple ability check), or your opponent "taps" after you gain the "Tap Out" feature.
    • 2) For "Mounted Punches", each hit is an opportunity, not a guaranteed success. So each available strike requires its own Attack roll. In your example, rolling a 4 on a d6, you would have to make 4 separate Attack rolls--each representing one of your possible Unarmed Strikes. If all 4 land (pretty good odds, since the target is prone), you're doing some pretty solid damage worthy of spending 1 Stamina point. If all 4 miss...you've just got crap luck lol. But most likely, the majority will hit for at least something, as they typically would in a real-life mounted position of superiority.

Balance[edit]

After having one of my players use this class for a couple of sessions I have found that the techniques are over powered as my player had the potential to do 9d6 + 21 damage per round at level 5

It looks like this is a joke class, I don't advise using it. I've flagged it up in case the authors want feedback. Marasmusine (talk) 16:43, 21 August 2016 (MDT)
I did think it was at first but after looking at the basic techniques I thought the author had put a lot of work into it

The only suggestions I could give to help balance it would be not to add proficiency to the damage and if a technique needs a check to do again add a set value to DC for each consecutive check e.g. 0, +5 , +10 etc

I have some more specific feedback for the first few levels.

  • 1st level, the table says "Trained" and "Unarmored Defense", but the class features say they are called "Highly Trained" and "Unarmored".
  • At 1st level, Highly Trained introduces making Strikes and Wrestling maneuvers, and some forumlas, but these are not relevant until 2nd level.
  • Number One Contender. Feats are an optional system, and class design should not assume they are in use.
  • It gives a forumla for "general maneuver damage", is this the same as the "maneuver damage" already given?
  • Some maneuvers ask for a CON save, but do not give a DC.
  • If all the maneuvers include unarmed damage, and require an attack roll, then it's simpler to just say that when you make an attack with an unarmed strike, you can choose a maneuver (with the text of the maneuver stating the addition damage and effect).
  • It doesn't explain what Stamina Points are. We are left to guess that when a maneuver says "1 Stam", this means you need to expend a stamina point.
  • I won't get into the specific maneuvers except to say they all have either terminology, mechanical or balance issues.
  • "Tick" isn't explained well enough, and I'm wondering if the term is needed at all. I use an attack action on a prone creature I am grappling to, say, perform a crossface. Crossface says "free", what does that mean? "Tick" says I "forgoe making other Actions and simply continue dealing the damage". What is the damage, it says "strike per tick"? Is it referring to the "strike damage" formula, which is really just the damage you would deal with an unarmed strike? How is forgoing the action different from using your action to deal the damage? A crossface immobilizes the opponent, but a grappled creature's speed is already 0. It's a mess.
  • Star Status. What does it mean additional proficiency with Pursauasion / Intimidation? What if I already have proficiency? Marasmusine (talk) 15:08, 22 August 2016 (MDT)
=======[edit]
  • I appreciate the feedback, I'm glad someone was able to test it out from a DM perspective. I will be revisiting the class soon to address all of the balance issues you noted, and will be tweaking the damage output to be more in line with the official classes. Thank you again, and I will get the issues ironed out and ready for a Test #2 lol.

Suggesting Changes[edit]

i have been using this class for a long time now, and I did a rebalance of some things, would it be ok if I passed some of my changes to here? things such as reducing the die of the mounted punches to 1d4, Adding tests to the skills that stun so that it has some kind of counter, i had also replaced the tap out feature since it can be really broken with the Str based subclass, in it place i put another extra attack, also i put a cap in the uncaged beast feature since it could be a little crazy against 10 enemies, potentially throwing someone over 40str, and i also changed the Sleeper hold a bit, so that you can't just do a guaranteed stun-lock for 10 rounds if you put him on a grab once, now it only makes him sleep until the start of his next round, giving it the use of turning barbarians off and braking concentration. I also threw all of the text into Grammarly and corrected most of the English mistakes, sorry if my writing is a bit clunky, English is not my main language.

Well, if you think it would improve the page, go wild. This is a community wiki, and if you think something can be made better, you can make it better. --SwankyPants (talk) 08:34, 21 April 2021 (MDT)
Seeing that first edit, just a few tips.
    • Things granted by classes are referred to as features, nothing else.
    • Strength, Dexterity, and other abilities are never shortened. Same with class resources like stamina. If you want to make it more official, use the 5a template, like this(Strength, Intelligence).
    • On a saving throw, not in a saving throw.
Just noticed these from a cursory glance, incase you make further edits I figured I could mention it. --SwankyPants (talk) 09:49, 21 April 2021 (MDT)
Thanks for pointing it out, i don't really know the difference between in a and on a, but took your word for it and changed, as for substituting STR, CON, DEX, for the full word ill take a little bit of more time. thanks for the feedback!
