Talk:Way of the 6 Hidden Ki Barriers (5e Subclass)

Did this change? Why? It was so much cooler!

As the person who made the changes, I think I'm the most equipped to answer this. As the original stood, it had a lot of issues.
  • At 3rd level, your only features gained from this subclass force you to take exhaustion if you want to use them. This is the exact issue people had with the Berserker barbarian subclass, but here, it starts to balloon, as all of the benefits here force you to take exhaustion.
  • As you get deeper into the subclass, more concerning things appear. Namely, Enhanced Meditation. By this level, the 1st barrier is free, so Flurry of Blows(one of the main things you spend ki points on) is essentially free as well. As a consequence of this, you'll probably always have most of your ki. Since meditating to remove Exhaustion only takes a minute(essentially instantly outside of combat) and two ki(something you now have a lot of), you can, more or less, instantly remove any exhaustion you get, so long as you don't go above the 4th barrier. Also good to remember ki comes back on a short rest, so this can be used and abused almost endlessly.
  • Compared to other monk subclasses, the bookkeeping was immense, as you need to keep track of barrier level, exhaustion, and what each barrier does. This puts a huge onus on both DMs and players, compared to the none of this that other monk subclasses require.
Concessions had to be made in the process of keeping this comparable to other monk subclasses. I did my best to try and maintain the original spirit of the page, but even then it was gonna be a bit hollow compared to the original. I hope this clears things up. --SwankyPants (talk) 10:04, 27 February 2022 (MST)

No I understand you changed it for balance reasons. It was VERY over the top and pretty strong. So changing it for balance and fitting for the game is not why I'm complaining. It just that it's concept was so cool. I mean no offence friend, for I do understand. Have a good day though
