Talk:The Archivists (5e Subclass)

Subsequent changes needed[edit]
- What happens if the scroll is destroyed? More detail needed since this eems to be something important.
- the shield spell should be linked as well. "Once per X rest" is incorrect wording in 5e.
- How long does the archivists blade buff last? Along with the magical thing. Because just because you're proficient in maces, does that mean any mace you use becomes magical? In that case, the requirement of wielding should be added.
- How many illusions can you make at a time? Ability scores need to be linked. How long does it take to record a creature in there? How does that even work? Is it like a spell scroll transcription? Also, how does turning a page work? Is it otherwise infinite?
- 30 feet in front of you... so is it a straight line?

I think I covered at least most of the issues, what may still be needed to do? --Dragomara (talk) 20:36, 23 June 2023 (MST) No changes were made after several hours. And the stub said that it should be removed if no edits were made after several hours and several hours have already passed. So I have removed the stub. --Dragomara (talk) 8:02, 24 June 2023 (MST) Decided to readd the stub to be on the safe side. --Dragomara (talk) 8:11, 24 June 2023 (MST) Removed all the edits I made cause I noticed that it doesn't seem that was wanted. Sorry for my mistake. --Dragomara (talk) 1:42, 25 June 2023 (MST)
- Looking better. Some more things:
- where does the tome reappear? In your hand, within a certain radius of you?
- How long does the advantage granted by the tome last? infinite is a bit too much.
- how long does the weapon damage buff last on the weapon for the archivists blade?
- The second part of the Archivist blade would be better if it stated wielding first rather than proficiency like the warlock pact of blade ("You can choose one melee weapon you have and designate it as your archivist's blade. You are considered proficient with this weapon and it is considered magical for the effects of..." eg)
- What size space does the shadow occupy? See minor illusion
- How does recording someone in your book work? ("In order to record a shadow into your journal, you must spend at least 1 hour observing X..." eg)
- Cognitive overload needs a recharge. It's too strong to be at will. --Yanied (talk) 19:15, 26 June 2023 (MDT)
Complications from New Items[edit]
The new split in the subclass features tree using the pact boons is interesting but a lot of it now further complicates interactions.
- How does the blade feature interact with the pact boon? The pact boon of blade as it is will make you a magical weapon. Would this stack with that?
- The scroll feature is pretty ridiculous. You just get four 3rd-level spells? From which list? How even? Even wizards, to copy spells into their books, need a source. These additional spells need to be properly listed out or given proper parameters, like the warlocks subclass spell lists. the casting of these spells should also follow spell scroll wording, honestly, rather than just "activate the spell by touching this scroll with your bare hands" which doesn't tell you anything about actions or cast times needed. It is interesting though, that the scroll burns up every time you use it, even if you don't use all the spells on it.
- What you mean is that you cannot upcast with the scroll on "higher levels" I assume
- "The scroll has an effective use for combat too"????? As if it didn't, allowing you access to more spells??? The dual-casting of spells is also even stronger, making this a effective one-blast cannon. Because even if the scroll burns up, you still have access to all your other warlock spells. Plus, at higher levels, this pretty much guarantees you an additional use of the 9th level spell meteor swarm. The wording of casting two spells at once with an action is also a pain to understand, as written...
- What is that spell table supposed to be for?
- For the familiar, this is extremely vague: "you have to know about the creature and read the creature in your book for up to one minute". Is that creature just in your book already or something? Don't you have to actually encounter it and observe it? The exception is of course something like the ranger's bread and butter of favored foe...
- This thing could give you a very powerful ally because of CR 2 options. The fact it can also attack unlike a normal familiar's constraint is also something considerable. And of course, compounding this with the enormous boon of increased CRs to control is ... a lot.
Overall, this thing got a huge boost in power from the familiar and scroll features, making it almost silly to take blade, honestly... Imbalanced, as a result. The features should also be put under better header listings... --Yanied (talk) 08:26, 30 June 2023 (MDT)
