Talk:Swordsman, 2nd Variant (5e Class)

Don't you think a Swordsman would focus more on the accuracy [Wisdom] in unison of might [Strength] or Speed [Dexterity] instead of them both? It'd be much more unique if the class, while not having Subclasses, have moves that can utilize Wisdom as well as one or the other chosen Stat. Plus, rolling JUST Honed Edge Damage makes wielding a Sword redundant. [Armitage407]

First of, Wisdom primarily isn't attributed to accuracy or even combat for the matter but of one's perception and insight on the world and of himself. The Monk class is primarily built around this and its features are reflected to be dependent on it. This version of the Swordsman ain't it and is primarily built in the Strength or Dexterity of the Swordsman, thus the possibility to use any of the both stats in the Swords Skills. Also, it's unbalanced to have two of the common saves in one class, thus its saving throws are at Strength and Dexterity and not Wisdom and Dexterity. --DonMafia (talk) 7:33, 1 January 2023 (GMT+8)
I never understood why one's perception of the battlefield wouldn't effect ones ability, but didn't know that Dexterity and Wisdom couldn't be part of the class. So forget about my curiousity.
I am not saying Dexterity and Wisdom can't be the core stats of a class, Monk is a pretty much good example of this. But as you can see from Monk, its saving throws are Strength and Dexterity as giving it two of the common saving throws would just be unbalanced. Besides, one's perception of the battlefield is usually saved for officer or commander type roles I believe as that kind of knowledge would be useful in giving out orders and commands. --DonMafia (talk) 4:30, 3 January 2023 (GMT+8)

Introduction of Subclasses[edit]

Sup folks. I introduced a subclass to this swordsman, allowing for more diversity in how to build a character in this class. The subclass gain features at 3rd, 6th, 11th and 17th levels (like a monk) and to open space for them, i did the following:

  • Moved the Sword Skills down to 2nd level. Seems a good level to gain your class "Special Power", matching other martials (monk's ki, fighter action surge, paladin and ranger spellcasting, rogue cunning action).
  • Athletic Body was moved to 5th level, since 2 and 3 will already be occupied, and 4th level you already gain an ASI, and the benefits from Athletic Body are pretty significant.
  • Superior Reflexes were removed from the core class, but reintroduced in the subclass, at the same levels, so nothing changed there. Same for the Sword Art gained at 11th level.

So, i believe the changes were minimal, but allow for more diversification of this class. Hope it is not a problem! Anastacio (talk) 14:10, 2 January 2023 (MST)
