With how versatile this spell is, perhaps they caster should be limited to learning only 2/3 of damage types when they take the spell. Or perhaps only being able to change the damage type at the the end of a short or long rest. --Meep (talk) 20:57, 6 April 2018 (MDT)

I just came across this while looking for an alternate green flame blade, and as much as the player in me loves this, the DM in me cannot stop cringing at how overpowered it is. Barring any objection, I'd like to alter it a bit to make it a little less awesome; like a cantrip should be. I'll try to keep it to one edit so it can be undone easily if it's too much. Alright, I feel like this is more balanced and although it can still change damage types, it can't change as often. Also, there are benefits to not changing the damage type, as the specific bonuses for each element (and the bonus damage from your ability modifier) are only present if you haven't changed damage types recently. Also, it now requires a full action, which seems much more reasonable. It no longer buffs the Wizard's dagger to a d8, but still allows a d6 if you keep it as force damage. I think this is (more) balanced, and a good melee option for classes that don't always like to be in melee range. Zibby (talk) 06:43, 27 October 2018 (MDT)
Well, so much for doing this in one edit. I like it now, and I think I kept the original flavor, if not the intent. It also makes more sense as an action, especially with the versatility it has. Zibby (talk) 09:16, 27 October 2018 (MDT)

"As an action I hit 'em with a magic greatsword I can wield with my casting ability instead of Strength, and on a hit it deals force damage equal to 2d8 + my casting ability modifier. By the way that's only one of eight different effects of this cantrip. Plus I don't even have to dedicate a hand to this weapon like a martial would. By the way did I mention this cantrip has effects that differ based on when you last took a short rest but *also* different effects based on when you last took a long rest?"
Stop it. Get some help. Please. - Guy 14:33, 25 May 2022 (MDT)
