Talk:Scarcaster (5e Class)
From D&D Wiki
So I'm not going to go into any balance things since this is unfinished and I'm just here to give ideas for features.
- For the roots, I guess focus on the idea of plants and what they typically do in dnd. The restraining bramble is a great idea, and I would expand that maybe to include effects of the entangle spell over an area, but with a shorter duration on restraining. I also get this idea of an immovable tree, kind of like an immovable rod, or even the idea of petrifying someone, but instead of a stone statue, they become a tree (from some horror book I read). Maybe a potion to do so?
- On the potions you might want to use more generic components so that it doesn't become an ingredient hunt for X specific creature. If you want to use materials, you'll need to define their sources too. An alternative might be to use an existing comestible magic item (like a potion of healing) and use scarcasting to mod that? With the rules of potion making in Xanathar, I think this might help keep the feature from being too hard to use. Crafting is hard.
- For ancestor, since I see there is still an empty level, I was thinking of the revolving around the feeling of a guardian. How about a feature that triggers when an ally dies within X feet of you that you can see? Sounds like a guardian's fury to me.
All in all, seems cool, like the 4e Shaman class. I'll be happy to look at it when it's done. Happy brewing -b --Yanied (talk) 13:59, 17 March 2021 (MDT)
- I've been wondering about the potion ingredients since you asked and have been wondering if that's what it's like for spellcasters? My group doesn't do that because keeping track of it is tedious, but I've been wondering: by the core rules, are you actually supposed to say that you purchased the material components, or is it just for the components that have monetary value? That may influence how I answer this. Those rules for potion making in Xanathar's sound interesting though, I may have to look at those. Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you for your ideas and for helping me out :)--Dinomaster337 (talk) 23:34, 13 April 2021 (MDT)
- Material components exist which do not have monetary values. They are very one-off almost since foci and component pouches can cover them. But if you look at a spell like fireball, the components are not priced. But I digress. In a nutshell, the components themselves have an innate value that must be priced for the value the spell dictates. So a diamond must be actually worth 5k gp and not just sold for that much by a phony... But that can be changed by a DM. sorry for this late response too!--Yanied (talk) 11:57, 5 August 2021 (MDT)
