I feel the {{needsbalance}} which was placed on this page is still warranted, for at least a few reasons:
- "Any undead that you see becomes under your control forever." Almost no spell effect in 5e are permanent, let alone those which grant you undead slaves. This would arguably be overpowered for any level, let alone 5th.
- Consider that a creature of (for example) CR 4 is meant to take on an entire party of 4th-level characters. A spell that grants you control of a creature typically lists a precise cap to challenge rating cap, and that cap is usually lower than your level.
- Compare this to conjure elemental. Both are 5th level spells. That spell only enables control of one creature of a CR no more than 5, for only up to an hour, and—most importantly—it requires concentration. Meanwhile, this spell lets you have infinite control over infinite monsters so long as they are undead monsters of CR 9 (or potentially higher) that you can see.
- As it is currently written, merely combining this spell with a few castings of animate dead (a very popular spell) or other spells could give you an evergrowing army of loyal undead in just a few days if you have access to something like a cemetery or battlefield, among other possibilities.
- Even if the creature fails its save, it is still stunned for a round, which in rapid combat is a pretty debilitating condition in of itself. You could say, even if the creature succeeds the save, you still essentially get a free round of hold monster on it.
Tl;dr - I believe this spell is currently overpowered. Very overpowered, in my opinion. If I were to remove the overpowering aspects, however, I fear the spell would essentially become animate dead. I'm not really sure what can be done to solve these issues without robbing the spell of its identity. - Guy 14:57, 24 April 2019 (MDT)
