Talk:Mediator (5e Subclass)

author's notes: this archetype was recently flagged as unbalanced, and I agree entirely. The Mediator was intended for a campaign with more emphasis on talking, investigation, research, politics, and exploration, and much less emphasis on tactical combat. And thus, much less for "stabby", armored guys to do. Thus, the mediator intrudes upon the party roles of the fighter, barbarian, ranger, and paladin, as he is ment for a campaign where those classes do not exist (or are, at least, very rarely used). The mediator is intended to supplant those classes as a strong, finesse fighter. (Where the "meaty" class is needed at all, that role is fulfilled by the Monk) Once again, I completely agree: this archetype would not be well suited for a game where the fighter classes are all being used; the mediator intrudes far too much into their function. Although it does bring up an interesting point: this setting needs a good counter to the feint ability of the mediator. An easier way for a defender to impose a disadvantage on attacks. I am contemplating a fencing feat that gives an attacker a disadvantage on attacks against a defending fencer, eliminating the "trump" of the feint in some situations, or at least making it more difficult and less common when needed.

08/02/2015 update!: after much consideration (and a lot of very helpful input, thank you, david, in particular) I think I have a way to balance the Mediator's Feint ability in a way that will keep it simple and easily manageable (in keeping with the rest of the 5e rulesystem) but also a useful and powerful feature of this rogue archetype. Specifically, the addition of a saving throw allowing the defender to negate the ability. I think this addition would be greatly complimented by the Feat: Fencing Expert. True, and it has the same name, Uncanny Dodge. Also, Meticulous Negotiator could use some work. Perhaps, to fit with the idea, you gained proficiency in one of Deception, Insight, Intimidation or Persuasion? SirSprinkles (talk) 16:26, 16 November 2016 (MST)
