Talk:Malvorrak, The Devourer of Light (5e Creature)
So ... how is anyone using official DnD content supposed to beat this thing aside from a wish spell?--Yanied (talk) 03:09, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
I thought this was Homebrew? Do all Homebrew creatures need to be made balanced enough that Official D&D content can beat? I'm working on a custom D&D campaign. If so it kind of Defeats the purpose of Homebrew in my opinion. --Ikkakkamakka44 (talk) 03:53, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
This creature is so beyond anything that could or should reasonably exist on a stat sheet. Assuming you're using official rules/content, even with optimal preparation, and significant support from allies and items, a single level 20 Barbarian might manage to hit around 1,100 effective HP...briefly. And yet, they would still be obliterated by a single attack from this creature, let alone the six attacks from its multiattack (not to mention its cataclysmically powerful legendary actions).
To put things into perspective, the highest possible spell save DC a player character can achieve with official rules and max-level gear is 29. Malvorrak’s saving throw bonuses alone are so absurdly high that he can pass those checks even on a natural 1.
His speed is so astronomical that he may as well have unlimited teleportation, allowing him to be wherever he wants at any time. His health pool is so vast that no player or creature could ever hope to dent it, let alone reduce it by even 1%. The odds of anyone in the Forgotten Realms and beyond taking on this monstrosity and standing a remote chance of victory are essentially nonexistent. Fighting this stat block is like fighting the concept of losing itself.
The thing is if you’re a DM and you want something to be unbeatable, you don’t need to meticulously design an absurdly overpowered stat block to enforce it. Just narrate that it happens. The sheer scale of this creature is so over-the-top that its size alone feels impractical for any tabletop visualization. I honestly can’t imagine a game mat big enough to fit its miniature, assuming you could even make one in the first place.
I'll finish with this: trying to calculate or balance stats for something like this feels like a misstep. Its sheer power is a narrative tool, not something meant to be crunched into numbers. In my opinion, it might be better to move this to the deities category instead. Snowlocko (talk) 13:00, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
To sum things up and hit the point in a more concise manner, stats are for things that are meant to be killable. If you don't want players to be able to kill something, don't stat that thing. You may find a better alternative listing this being as a deity. --Nuke The Earth (talk) 13:13, 27 January 2025 (UTC)
I see that this Deity page was made. Is this creature page still relevant?--Yanied (talk) 03:10, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
No this can be removed if needed. Appreciate it. Thanks! Ikkakkamakka44 (talk) 04:58, 28 January 2025 (UTC)
