Rolling d20s for damage?[edit]
The damage die for this spell bugs me. I know this spell is supposed to do incredibly random damage, but still using a d20 for damage is just weird and pretty much unprecedented in 5E. 2602:306:3317:2900:701A:6FF:A076:1FF8
- I personally don't mind the randomness of it, but doing an average of 10.5 (or more with good Charisma) per spell level to me seems like it can be pretty overpowered. It isn't too bad at slot levels 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but between about 4th and 8th level inclusive its easily more powerful against any single target than any damaging spell in the SRD.
- The main drawback is that it only targets one creature at a time and does nothing on a whiff (unlike most high-damaging spells, like fireball or meteor swarm, which target an area and still do half damage on a whiff).
- This issue could be mitigated if the spell couldn't be cast above slot level 3rd, but that in of itself is an odd restriction on a spell that already has several oddities. - Guy (talk) 11:56, 2 August 2017 (MDT)
- The +Charisma damage bugs me more than the d20. As does having a cleric deal force damage.
- The scaling with level is fine if you control the rate at which it increases. I have fixed this for you.
- Maybe the spell could do something that feels lucky in addition to the damage. Marasmusine (talk) 13:51, 2 August 2017 (MDT)
- Aw man someone beat me to it. I was totally about to make a spell like this (With radiant damage but eh, details). Wouldn't have added the modifier or crit chance though. Definitely a simple 1D20 per spell level Constitution save wastes spell kind of spell. In any case, however it should work, I guess I shouldn't make my own since this one exists. Early bird gets the death star. --Supersmily5 (talk) 02:10, 2 December 2020 (MST)
