Talk:Isaac's Missile Swarm (5e Spell)
From D&D Wiki
Balance[edit]
What's the point of this spell? It is labeled an upgraded version of magic missile, but just casting magic missile with a 3rd-level spell slot is mostly better than this spell. The only drawback is on average 3 ½ less damage output if all the missiles actually get used, but that seems negligible due to the range differences, the fact magic missile can target the same creature with more than one missile, and the lack of a costly material component. - Guy (talk) 16:41, 30 November 2017 (MST)
Rework: Isaac's Missile Swarm[edit]
Changes made:
- ) Increased the base number of missiles from 6 to 10.
- ) Decreased the effect radius by 20ft.
- ) Reduced the cost of the material component by 50% and removed any question as to the consumption of the spell component.
- ) Removed the text forcing the targeting of creatures affected by Shield or the Brooch of Shielding (Can now avoid targeting such creatures, at the discretion of the DM).
Effect changes:
- ) More missiles in a smaller radius means that a creature will likely to be hit by at least 2 of the missiles at level 3 (average 7 force damage per target; Magic Missile's 5d4+5, average of 17.5 is better single target, but overall worse multi-target).
- ) Nineteen missiles at 9th spell level vs. eleven missiles with Magic Missile.
