Talk:Grandmaster (3.5e Prestige Class)
From D&D Wiki
Balance - 8/10[edit]
On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is abysmal, 5 is adequate, and 10 is damned inspired and well implemented, I rate this entry: a 8. Generally, I like the class and the ideas behind the class. It builds on itself. The abilities are concise. My only real complaint about it is that these are things that should be native to the fighter class, rather than an add-on. (But that's no fault of this prestige class.) I would rate the class a little higher, but I think that the class needs even more abilities to choose from. This is a fertile approach that is not yet at its full potential. Hopefully someone can playtest the class and give us commentary.
The "one year training" is damned high for the class. If that were the only requirement for the class, no one would take it unless they were doing "start at x level" builds. --Dmilewski 08:32, 8 December 2006 (MST)
Balance - 8/10[edit]
8 out of 10 is a good number for this prestige class, and yes all it needs is a few extra grandmaster abilities since he is the "archmage" of fighters. for the rest, keep up the good work! --Ymir 06:35, 21 December 2006 (MST)
Weapon Versatility?[edit]
Weapon Versatility? How could a warhammer ever do piercing damage? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.210.208.236 (talk • contribs) 18:10, 11 January 2007 (MST). Please sign your posts.
- Warhammers have corners and those corners can pierce, it is just extremely hard to use them effectively in this manner. That's just one idea. With a bit of creativity I am sure there are more ideas on how this would work. --Calidore Chase 17:26, 11 January 2007 (MST)
- This is an interesting ability, possibly a bit on the fake side, but their are ways to make this work. If you like, and think it is very off key, go ahead and change it to something more realistic. --Green Dragon 20:51, 11 January 2007 (MST)
Rating - 3/10[edit]
Some feat in the requirements makes little sense, the reach out ability is senseless unless you prevent it from being used with some small or larger weapons, taking war power five times makes you quite hard to be considered balanced... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.221.198.36 (talk • contribs) 17:30, 25 January 2007 (MST). The concept is good. My only real problem with it is that some of the abilities are overpowered compared to others. Balance would be an issue when using this prestige class compared to another straight melee class (because the abilities give unique, and very powerful advantages, especially the damage reduction ability and the change damage type ability) and the drawback of one year of training is only a roleplaying difference (not affecting actual gameplay directly). This is a very good idea, perhaps ignore DR/5 instead of 10 and selecting one damage type you change your normal weapon damage type into would balance the class better. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.189.175.92 (talk • contribs) 20:30, 22 October 2007 (MST). - This class needs some work, and if you can see good areas as to where this class can be improved please improve it. This class, currently, does not have a contributing author. --Green Dragon 22:47, 22 October 2007 (MDT)
Special[edit]
I noticed for your special you put "Special: Must prove worthy to be accepted at elite fighting camp and spend one year training with a Grandmaster". In the actuall game, how are you going to work this out. Are you really going to send them to a camp for a year... possible, but then you would have to A. come up with a year long adventure and B. find something to preoccupy your other PCs. Nice concept, but can you actually play it out? I would love to hear how, if you have found a way I have not. Palantini 10:49, 26 May 2008 (MDT)
- What they mean by that, is for you to use as part of a background, you could just skip that if you wanted and the other PC's could come up with a story of what they did the past year while he/she was away training, for example... Galben the fighter goes away to train to be a grandmaster, while his friend Leroy the sorcerer goes away to train at a Mages acadamy to be an Archmage, and Ronin the Archer works for the theives guild making some money for their next adventure.... atleast thats how we 'do it'....Hope this helps --Kisame93 | Ryan B.
