Talk:Gastrosapien (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
I like this race alot, would you be open to putting in some things to make this a bit more scientific? "salt deals XD4 X= 1/? pounds of salt" and having resistance to bludgeoning damage, and being able to move faster on slime/mucus, if not that's fine
Hello! Thanks for your input. For a time, I was thinking of including weakness to salt, but I figured that a Dm could add that with discretion. MrBrink 21:37, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
Ok, cool.
Soft Bodied[edit]
The vulnerability given by Soft Bodied seems very broken, and the other abilities really don't make up for it. Giving resistance isn't overpowered because it's essentially a -50% dmg multiplier, but vulnerability is a +100% dmg multiplier (equivalent to immunity!) and those damage types are extremely common early in a campaign where you can't counteract the vulnerability with subclass features SirCranburry (talk) 09:10, 21 November 2018 (MST)
Now Soft bodied only gives others disadvantage when trying to grapple you, which Slick Mucus gives already, so.. idk what should be done about that ability TheIthuriel (talk) 23:25, 9 November 2019 (CET)
Things that need balance in my opinion.[edit]
Ground Feeding breaks survival gameplay while giving the creature effectively 5 SP a day for free
Salt Vulnerability is one of those things that will either never come up or make the character completely unplayable, and is real bait for hostile interactions between a player and DM
Acidity's grappling damage is not associated with any action, like other grapple damage things tend to be IIRC.
Slime Puddle, a 20ft sphere of entangle, plus a potential 2d4 fire damage with no save to every creature in the area might be too good. Should probably clarify how, and if, the fire spreads.
Otherworldly Transparency needs clarified whether it gives you the Invisible condition. If so, it needs to be a 1 per long rest thing. Does it end immediately before or immediately after the terminating action?
The ability to climb on most any surface is probably too much considering the other things this race has going on.
I would also submit that Shell Defense should make your AC a flat 14+Con rather than being a bonus; adding your Dexterity or Wisdom while balled up on the ground doesn't pass the sniff test. AmeyBoop (talk) 20:56, 13 February 2023 (MST)
- Removing ground feeding was moving in a good direction. In addition to the comments above, Soft Bodied remains broken because no race should have resistance to one of the basic weapon damage types. The use of salt vulnerability is unfortunately also a poor sense of balancing this race against what it has, and is unsuited for 5e. Nixing these and then further improving the subrace trait wordings would make it better designed for the edition.--Yanied (talk) 20:47, 16 February 2023 (MST)
- In light of recent changes, I will explain what I am adding:
- Making swamp terrain its own trait
- Shell Defense can stay, per official tortle. Combined with invertebrate makes this race very strong on defensive fronts, so you should expect your dm to diversify trap damage types... I also lowered the AC bonus for shell defense since this race gets more than tortle with its subs and also snail shells are kind of weaker than turtles.
- Stricter wording on slime conditions
- As much as I love salt vulnerability, it doesn't work well in 5e save for a more ribbon-like trait. 5e's mechanics don't really account for how much salt or how much of your body is touching salt, and it can get really damaging when playing against a dm...
- This page is a beast type, which comes with some inherent benefits...
- Metal corrosion is a big if but considering that you can only use it 6 times at most and it only breaks after -5, it is something interesting...
- Nerfed the toxic sub because it does get a lot with four benefits and none that minor.
- Nerfed slime puddle. It isn't exactly web nor does it make sense for it to be flammable in my opinion.
- Reduced transparency to 1/long rest.
- Changed well traveled to breath holding instead of swimming because snail.
- Overall, I am happy with the huge amount of interest and content that was added to the page. It might still be a bit strange balance-wise, but it is much more interesting than it was before.--Yanied (talk) 21:24, 21 February 2023 (MST)
