Talk:Franklin's Funny Missiles (5e Spell)
From D&D Wiki
Yo it's DJ Biggs, I realize the derivative nature of this spell, but I'm mostly curious on the balance of this spell. On the one hand, this deals a little less damage than casting Magic Missile twice and has a worse range. On the other hand, this only uses one spell slot and does deal quite a bit for a first level spell. I'm open to suggestions! DJ Biggs (talk)
- The fact that you have to compare it to casting magic missile twice should already tell you about the balance of the spell. It's Magic Missile 2.0. A d8 instead of a d4 and a +2 instead of a +1 makes it SIGNIFICANTLY better than Magic Missile, and therefore it should not be a first level spell. This should at least be a second level spell, probably third. --MarshDASavage (talk) 11:28, 16 April 2021 (MDT)
- Yeah, even if it takes a round to go off, you could potentially still cast it before combat goes off, and even then your average damage a turn doesn't change, since it doesn't take up your action next turn. 3rd level might be overkill though, as then you'd be comparing it to fireball and such, going from 24 damage to everyone in an area on a failed save to 16 confirmed damage. I'd say 2nd level. --SwankyPants (talk) 11:36, 16 April 2021 (MDT)
- Good point. I'll go ahead and change it to second. I do think that confirmed damage is very strong, but I can see why it should be second. --MarshDASavage (talk) 11:42, 16 April 2021 (MDT)
