Talk:Fighter, Tirr (3.5e Class)

The Balancing Act[edit]
So, you may notice that this class is very different from the original Fighter. You may have also noticed that the influence of Races of War's Tome Fighter is present, and maybe that clued you into the possibility that the traditional balance of the SRD, regarding the fighter specifically, is not really intended. You've got good eyes.
I don't really want a Races of War game. To me, it is too drastic and transformational to be comfortably molded into my campaigns, and its original content has some features that have glaring faults. That said, I do believe that some classes are inherently less well off than others, and I do put stock in the data that has been accumulated, over several years, into the 3.5e Class Tiers, of which the SRD:Fighter is located sorely down in Tier 5. Exactly one level above broken (with a single significant exception being the Zhentarim variant, bumping it up to Tier 4).
3.5e is not balanced, in the sense that the classes presented have wildly different potentials and abilities, to the point that some classes end up just not even reaching basic competency, and others can destroy the universe, and also be a major artist, comedian, engineer, and puzzle-solver at the same time.
This class is my attempt at remaking the fighter and bringing it up to a Tier 3 level class, which I find is a good mid-point between high-potential, possibly game-breaking classes, and the weak and inept ones. Tier 3 classes represent the idea of classes that, in any build, shine in their specialization but can still be somewhat useful outside of it. They don't have the limitless power of Tier 1 and 2, and can't break the world, but they feel heroic and can hold their own for a little bit in unfamiliar situations.
If you have suggestions, please let me hear them. Just keep the above in mind; This is supposed to be a Tier 3 fighter, which will be objectively better than a Tier 4 fighter. I'm also working in conjunction with users in the DND section of Reddit to try and find an equilibrium. --Jwguy (talk) 15:57, 10 February 2016 (MST)
