Talk:Chain, Weighted (5e Equipment)
From D&D Wiki
It seems to me that 1d6 is really low for a heavy, two-handed weapon. That said, no heavy, two-handed weapon should have finesse. It's an interesting and fun design for a weapon, but it makes no logical sense in its mechanics. St. Noof 21:42 08 May 2015 (EDT)
- You can edit it as you see fit, I also agree that "heavy finesse" is wierd. Marasmusine (talk) 01:21, 9 May 2015 (MDT)
- There we go. Because I am a gracious DM (not to be taken seriously; I'm not that haughty), I left in the whole "special" bit. In my campaigns, weighted chains will not have that additional rule about being a monk weapon. It's just too specific for a monk to bother with it when you can already have nunchaku. - I'll probably edit it again at some point in the future to make it a double weapon. Marasmusine (talk) 13:42, 9 May 2015 (MDT)
Unnecessary Complexity[edit]
This may just be me, but this feels a bit too rules-heavy for a mundane 5e weapon. Not only that, but the paragraph of mechanics hides a lot of non-5e wording:
- "Both ends can be dual-wielded simultaneously in this manner." First, dual-wielding should be Two-Weapon Fighting, but secondly, wouldn't doing so count as wielding it in two hands?
- "If the target is within 5' of the wielder, the target must make a Dex save on a successful hit roll to avoid being tangled in the chain and taking 1/2 weapon damage, no effect on successful save." This is effectively a saving throw on most hits with a mundane weapon. What is the DC of the "Dex save"?
- "This is a non-contested restraint." What does this section even mean? Does the target become restrained?
- Why even bother with the Rest State mechanic? It only seems to weigh down this weapon's mechanics even further, and while it may be more realistic, so is a player simply creating/maintaining momentum during their turn without needing mechanics.
- Most of the "Weighted Ends and Damage" section could just be a mechanic on its own not restricted to just this weapon (oh hey would you look at that).
- "Splash Effect of Potion in Sprinkler" again, what does this even mean?
Unless anybody has any objections, I will cut this page down significantly shortly.--Ref3rence (talk) 12:50, 17 January 2022 (MST)
- There's at least 3 different Chain weapons already, anyways. No need for this one to cover the same bases. Go nuts. --SwankyPants (talk) 12:53, 17 January 2022 (MST)
