Talk:Artificer Battery Pack (3.5e Equipment)

Some Improvements[edit]
Hmm, this is a very good concept of equipment, I like it. But...absorb Craft Reserve points equal to the CR of monster defeated? There seems several problems with that...one, if you were to, say, fight an advanced monster the CR would still be the same even though the monster is tougher. Also, if you are a 20th-level artificer with 5000 Craft Reserve, even if you fought nothing but CR 20 fiends and dragons, it would take 250 kills of those same near-epic-level monsters to fill it up, with only incrementally insignificant gains per kill if you really are 20th-level. Plus, you can bestow more than one negative level, can't you? I've got a better idea: absorb Craft Reserve points equal to monster's Hit Dice x number of negative levels bestowed. That would be much more useful, I think. It would also work on characters, that way. Also, as I'm guessing this would be an "Eberron" item, that 'black crystal' could be fluffed up as a Kyber Dragonshard. It even fits that way; Kyber shards are black, and are used in binding elementals, and are also used in soul trapping and other similar functions. I'm going to go ahead and make the edits myself, I was just putting up a note here as to what I'm doing and why. Hope you like it! ;) --a guy who likes artificers TheWarforgedArtificer —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.207.151.66 (talk • contribs) 23:00, 23 April 2009 (MDT). - Ooo, thats nice. Make it so! -- Eiji 12:51, 24 April 2009 (MDT)
- Wait, what the? My changes are gone... I said Hit Dice, not CR, because Hit Dice is a better measure. And the wording was changed from what I said, too. It keeps saying XP instead of Craft Reserve points, which are technically different. AND the Khyber shard is gone, too. What's going on? - That's odd. I was wondering that too. I'll look into it. In any case I'm employing said edits again.
- And done. I think I know what happened. Probably someone confused you with a vandal and reverted, but didn't see my approval on Talk. It's cool bro. -- Eiji 11:37, 25 April 2009 (MDT)
- Ah, thanks. In fact, I've got some more ideas for improvements on this item, like, instead of it's max Craft Reserve being based off the user, have graduated versions of it, like Lesser and Greater. That way, it could even be useful to more than just artificers (considering artificers only have infusions, not spells, and there's not one infusion that bestows negative levels, they'd have to make a wand or scroll that does that). All that, and and more detail, description, and whatnot to make the item better. I'll get to work on it when I can ;). Eureka![edit]
I've done it! It was a bugger, but I figured it all out! Ahahaha! Okay, see, I was trying to figure out how to set the graduation levels of the vest, like I said, lesser, improved, greater, etc., to get the dependancy off of an artificer wearing the vest, and to not make it such a cheap item at high levels. And the fact that it's maximum hold was based off the artificer wearing just...didn't make much sense to me. I -really- did my homework on this, I was going through several books, and mainly the rules on creating magic items to figure this out for several hours. Eventually, I somehow got the idea to determine price and caster level not from graduated versions, but off of the craft reserve itself. I looked at the prices for some high-level magic items (100,000gp), divided by a 20th-level artificer's craft reserve of 5,000, and got 20. Everything fell right into place from there. Craft Reserve x twenty to help determine price and cost. I calculated multiple scenarioes, it all scaled well. A maximum cap on the vest based off of the level it's made at, not the artificer wearing it. It all fit perfectly. I've completely rewritten the the item, with completely new text on how it works and it's limitations, and a few new things I just added in. In my opinion, now, instead of just being a cool concept, this can be a genuine item. Hope you like! (incidentally, this is my first major wiki edit/addition, ever. I'm tingling with anticipation to see how it will be recieved ;) I may just create an account here if it goes well). - Me again. At the behest of my friend, I went over my calculations again, and realized the multiplier for determining price and cost from Craft reserve max may have to be a little higher. Instead of twenty, I've come up with either 30 or 40 as a more balanced multiplier. However, now I'm not entirely sure which. I'm putting it at 40 for now, but 30 may be a better number, I'm not sure. Anyone else have any input on this?
