Talk:99.97% insta-kill mage assassin (5e Optimized Character Build)
From D&D Wiki
First, this build is illegal. This set-up requires you to somehow gain access to shapechange, a spell only available to a druid or wizard of at least 17th level. The multiclassing rules make it pretty clear you don't gain access to all spells of all classes you've ever touched. Considering only two levels are invested in wizard, it's unclear how the character would get access to this spell.
Second, but much less important, this build is incredibly impractical. This requires a 9th-level spell that the character wouldn't have in RAW, an 8th-level spell the character wouldn't have in RAW, the consumption of a 1500gp material component, four turns, and for the target to be unconscious or otherwise incapacitated. If you can actually approach one isolated and incapacitated creature but can't otherwise kill it in four turns, your DM really needs to show some mercy. - Guy 16:38, 13 March 2020 (MDT)
- "You can learn this spell through the bards Magical Secrets feature."
- You can't, though. To get shapechange (a 9th level spell) through Magical Secrets, one must be an 18th level bard. This build caps at 15 levels in bard.
- Because this class is multiclassing so much, it actually doesn't have access to any 9th level spells even when it reaches 20th level. It has access to 9th level spell slots, but that isn't the same thing as knowing an actual 9th level spell. - Guy 11:15, 15 March 2020 (MDT)
I’m reading this page a while after the original talk page post was published, but currently it has 3 levels in bard and 17 in wizard, which would be adequate to gain an 8th and 9th level spell slot.
