Wondrous item, uncommon

This robe is a drab, dark gray, and has draconic wards etched in silver sewn into shapes reminiscent of armored plating. When worn the wards glow faintly giving the wearer a sense of security.

While wearing this robe you know the mage armor and shield spells. You can cast either spell without expending a spell slot. Once you cast either spell in this way, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spell using spell slots you have.

You can also use the magic of the robe to permanently learn the mage armor and shield spells by making a DC 15 Intelligence check. If you succeed a rune appears on your body and you learn the spells but the robe becomes nonmagical. If you fail the check you take 3d6 psychic damage and cannot repeat the check for 7 days.
