The Penumbraul[edit]

The shadow...
—Hilga Montblatten, human Penumbraul

The Penumbraul are a dark and mysterious order within the Church of Modroben, rarely disclosing their identities even to each other. Most Penumbraul are known only their single handler within the Church, a higher-ranking Penumbraul. Their anonymity is vital to protect the Church's interests because the Penumbraul sneak into undead and necromancer communities and assassinate their leaders, split their allies and destroy their power. Any knowledge of Penumbraul identities or activities could be disastrous for the agents who are still in the field. Many Penumbraul pretend to be Silverslicer in order to protect themselves.

Becoming a Penumbraul[edit]

Penumbraul are surreptitiously recruited from amongst the Shadowclaine mainly, the Rogue class of Claine. Their most important Ability Scores are Dexterity, Intelligence and Charisma.

Class Features[edit]

Like all members of the Church of Modroben, Penumbraul are expected to be neutral in most affairs (excepting only the defense of death, time and fate). Their class features should not be used except in the manner of church business and in direct self-defense. It is very rare for Penumbraul powers to be used against anyone other than undead creatures or necromancers. All of the following are class features of the Penumbraul:

Hide From Undead: At first level, Penumbraul can cast Hide From Undead three times per day. They can count their level as any Claine class as well as any Rogue-based classes for the purposes of determining how long Hide From Undead will last. The duration of their Hide From Undead spells is doubled.

At third level, Penumbraul can cast Hide From Undead six times a day, and can do so as a free action, with no spell components.
At fifth level, Penumbraul cast Hide From Undead at will.

Imitate Undead: At first level, Penumbraul can cast Imitate Undead three times per day. For the purposes of determining duration and saving throw, she gains a +2 per Penumbraul level.

At second level, Penumbraul can use magical effects in order to pass as undead when under the effect of an Imitate Undead spell. For example, a Penumbraul might grow fangs real enough to pierce skin or survive in the company of a lich for weeks pretending to have no need for food or water.
At sixth level, Penumbraul can use multiple instances of Hide From Undead at the same time. For example, he could appear as a vampire to other vampires while zombies see him as one of their own.

Shadowsense: At second level, Penumbraul can see in darkness of any sort, even magical darkness.

Slip Through Shadow: At fourth level, Penumbraul can use dimension slide as a spell-like ability one time per day+1 per Int. modifier. This works just like the psionic power, except that you must start and end in a shadow. You can start in your own shadow and end in someone else's.

At seventh level, Penumbraul can use this power three times a day.
At tenth level, Penumbral can use this power at will.

Shadowy Door: At fifth level, Penumbral gain the ability to use Dimension Door as a spell-like ability two times per day. As with Slip Through Shadow, she must start and end in a shadow.

Shadow Walk: At eighth level, Penumbral gain the ability to use Shadow Walk as a spell-like ability two times per day. As with Slip Through Shadow, she must start and end in a shadow.

Delayed Blast Cleave: At ninth level, Penumbral can cast Greater Blast Cleave with a delay of up to twenty-four hours. This can be set with a trigger, such as the arrival of a specific person. They can cast this spell three times per day.
