Majid's Masterful Magical Map (5e Equipment)

Wondrous item, rare

What appears to be a plain map of the local region is in fact a magical piece of parchment that can display the holder's location relevant to the region they're in, along with any landmarks or places they've been since taking possession of the map. With a slightly investment of magical energy, the map can change scale and display a map of a local area such as a town or a dungeon, allowing the wielder to better back trace their steps or navigate.

Comes inscribed with the major settlements (the big cities of Zhakara for example) and major terrain features (mountain ranges, oceans, lakes, rivers, etc) of the region it's found in but everything else is up to the wielder doing some proper traveling. The map retains this knowledge even if passed to a new holder, who can continue filling in the map, or the previous contents of the map can be erased.

When moving between known points on the map you can navigate safely and accurately without making survival checks. When moving to a known destination you haven't been to before like a city you have advantage on survival checks to navigate. The DC of checks to navigate to knew locations you've been given approximate locations for is reduced. All other checks are as normal.

Dispell Magic and similar effects will destroy enchantment on the map turning it back into a simple regional map, but one with all your regional points of interest marked. The more detailed information it contained will be lost and irretrievable without the use of Wish or similar magic.
