Krogan[edit]
Physical Description[edit]
[Source] |
Due to the hostile environment of Tuchanka, krogan bear many traits associated with prey animals; wide-set eyes, thick armor plating, and multiple sets of vital organs should one cease functioning. Their hands and feet each bear three taloned digits, and their legs are bowed similarly to turians and quarians. The large hump around their shoulders and the back of their head is capable of storing a large amount of water and nutrients, with larger humps being viewed as a status symbol.
Younger krogan have yellow or green markings on their hides. These markings darken to brown or tan over time, showing their age. Younger krogan tend to have looser plates on their head with soft spots in between. When they grow older the plates grow together to form one whole. Prior to the genophage, krogan females could produce clutches of up to 1,000 newborns. Today, only 1 in 2,000 survives.
History[edit]
Ancient krogan civilization was once culturally rich, with architectural and artistic talent that would put almost any other species to shame. However, with mastery of their world came a lack of challenge, as trait2=Natural Genius |description2=At the end of character creation, choose one skill that you are proficient in. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses the chosen skill. thresher maws fell to battalions of tanks and harvesters were outmaneuvered by squadrons of jets. Glory in battle came from challenge, and the only challenge left was each other. By 20th century BCE, with the dawn of krogan nuclear technology, their homeworld of Tuchanka was transformed into a radioactive wasteland, with small warring clans fighting over what little resources survived for 2000 years.
At the tail end of the 1st century CE, when the Rachni War threatened to wipe the Council races from the galaxy, the salarians were responsible for granting the krogan contemporary technology and a more hospitable homeworld. With greater numbers, durability, and physical strength, the krogan destroyed the rachni offensive, hunting them to complete extinction by the end of the Rachni War in in 3rd century CE. However, the war had taught the krogan clans two important lessons: the wider galaxy was a thing to be fought, and they were stronger than the Council's forces. Krogan expansion began slowly, colonizing uninhabited worlds in nearby systems, but the nature of krogan reproduction in a comparatively post-scarcity world meant growth would be exponential. In the 7th century CE, multiple krogan attacks on Council colonies marked the beginning of the Krogan Rebellion. Ten years later, a turian strike force was given a bioweapon developed by the salarian Special Tasks Group and dispersed it into the atmosphere of Tuchanka, inflicting the wider krogan population with the genophage. While this stopped the Krogan Rebellions, it sent their population on a course toward extinction, and neither the turians or salarians would be forgiven any time soon.
Society[edit]
Krogan are selfish, unsympathetic, and blunt. Conflict is almost always resolved with a violent display of dominance rather than any actual discussion. Krogan have three great insults in their culture: to be ignored, to be "phage-lucky" (i.e. the only reason a krogan is alive is because the genophage killed all other competition), and to not be worth killing. Self interest always comes first, causing treachery to neither be a surprise or offensive. Most krogan are pessimistic in both how the rest of the galaxy views their race, as well as their race's chances of survival.
Female krogan rarely leave their homeworld, focusing on breeding in an attempt to keep krogan numbers from declining too quickly. The few remaining fertile females who can carry young to term are treated as prizes of war, to be seized, bartered or fought over. However, purposefully harming a female krogan is a crime worthy of banishment or worse. Female krogan are far more thoughtful than their male counterparts.
