Karsus's Power Crystal (5e Equipment)

Wondrous item (focus), artifact (requires attunement)

This crystal was created my the most infamous wizard in history, Karsus. Trying to overthrow the Gods themselves, he created a way to cast a 12th level spell. One of the intermediate steps for doing so was this crystal, which automatically harnesses the power of the cosmic radiation and condenses it to a piece of incredibly pure ether. He used this crystal over decades to gather enough power for his goal.

Now this crystal still operates but it's connection to higher power has faded. While there is no creature attuned to this item, the crystal is dormant, appearing as a jet black beautifully carved piece of crystal. When a creature that is capable of casting 9th level spells - on its own - touches the crystal, it comes to life, taking a 9th level spell to boot up. After 5 minutes of uninterrupted spinning and glowing, the crystal lodges itself between the shoulder blades of the creature that used the 9th level spell for the boot up sequence. The crystal then starts to burrow into the back of the creature, annihilating a part of its spine which functions the crystal will take over. The creature takes 100 fire damage during this process and falls unconscious for an hour while the crystal calibrates optimal working conditions. If the creature dies during this process, the crystal will go dormant and wait for a new owner.

Random Properties. The Karsus's Power Crystal has the following random properties:

  • 3 major beneficial properties
  • 3 major detrimental properties

One Step Away from Mortals. Each dawn, generate a 10th level spell slot which can only be used to upcast spells (there are no new spells added). The stored spell slot fades after not being used within a day.

Two Steps Away from Mortals. You lose all racial features. Your skin becomes pale and prominent characteristic features become less defined.
From the crystal, two wings sprout to have a higher surface area for gathering cosmic power, but they can also be used for other means.
You gain a 80ft fly speed.

Scales of God. Everything comes at a price, some prices - the God's prices - are just better.
You gain a +2 to your Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores.
You get a -2 to your Strength, Dexterity and Constitution scores.
(These bonuses bypass the limits of mortals, of course)

Curse. You cannot unnatune from this item (not even by means of a Wish spell or a divine intervention). If you somehow do, you die.
