Irritatio Ultimo (5e Equipment)

Wondrous Item, artifact

Created by the Demon Prince Fraz-Urb'luu as a weapon of ultimate chaos against the Archdevils, this item is far more dangerous than it appears. It appears as merely a metal stamping box approximately the size of a human fist made of infernal iron with a small pillar of a handle on top and a slightly raised imprint of a circle with an X inside it on the underside. The Irritatio Ultimo is under a permanent nondetection spell that cannot be dispelled without a wish cast while holding the Irritatio Ultimo.

When the bottom of the Irritatio Ultimo is placed on any physical copy of a contract, it brands the document with the circled X, completely negating it. The same mark will appear on all other copies of the contract. When used any magic or laws will immediately alter to consider all terms and conditions of the contract null and void. All parties that were signatories to the contract, and Fraz-Urb'luu, will immediately gain knowledge that the contract has been negated, though not the means unless they recognize the mark of the Irritatio Ultimo. All parties are free to make a new agreement. The Irritatio Ultimo will work on any contract of any origin, either mundane or magical. Any established results of the contract will remain unchanged, but any future or ongoing obligations will be removed.

For example, if the Irritatio Ultimo were used on a contract between a warlock and a devil for power in exchange for the warlock’s soul upon their death, then the warlock could keep any powers they already got and the devil would have no claim on their soul, but also wouldn’t be obliged to provide any future abilities unless a new deal was struck. The same thing would happen if the warlock made a deal with an Archfey, celestial, genie, lich, or even gods. By the same token, the warlock could borrow a million gold from a bank, use the Irritatio Ultimo on the loan agreement, and the bank would have no legal recourse to repossess the funds it essentially gifted to the warlock. They would be aware the warlock pulled some magic trick on them and could respond extralegally though.

Destroying the Irritatio Ultimo. The Irritatio Ultimo can only be destroyed by an archdevil willingly using it on every contract they hold. Upon the last negation, both the item and the archdevil will be completely destroyed beyond any ability to resurrect.
