Human[edit]

History[edit]

During the reign of the Forerunner Empire, humanity, like many other species, were the forerunners' servants, though their own kingdom stretched far across the stars. Humanity was the first to begin experimenting with the dust that made up the Precursors' postmortem, yet ever-living bodies, accidentally unleashing the Flood on the galaxy. Though the outbreak was quelled by their own might in combination with their close san'shyuum allies, the threat they had awakened angered the Forerunner Empire, resulting in a war that crushed humanity. As punishment, their scattered remnants were made primitive and returned to their homeworld.

In 2075, the United Nations established the United Earth Government amid an unrivaled era of peace. By the beginning of the 22nd century, Earth's moon Luna, Mars, and the moons orbiting Jupiter bore human colonies, though travel between colonies was lengthy. During the Interplanetary War, which covered most of the 2180s, calls for peace resulted in the United Earth Government becoming a true governing body over all human nations, as well as a universal military in the United Nations Space Command (UNSC). In 2291, the first Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine was created, allowing humanity to access slipspace, an eleven-dimensional plane of reality through which lightyears can be traversed in minutes, though a ship would be annihilated without the quantum field generated by the engine.

As humanity spread, it was unintentionally split between the Inner Colonies, whose early founding and close distance from Earth left their inhabitants as loyal to the UEG as Earth itself, and the Outer Colonies, whose limited resources and far distance from Earth created instability and discontent. This divide ultimately resulted in the Insurrection, a civil war spanning all of human space that included the creation of the first two SPARTAN generations.

But this civil war would not reach a natural conclusion. In 2525, Harvest, an outer-colony planet, was attacked by the Covenant. The next ten years nearly spelled humanity's extinction, whether it be from the Covenant's total destruction of human colonies one after the other, from the reawakening of the Flood, or the ever-looming threat of the Halo Array being fired. Humanity would only survive due to the splintering of the Covenant and an alliance between themselves and the sangheili, though humanity would continue to fight remnants of the Covenant even into the 2550s.
