Ho-Oh is a phoenix-like creature that flies about the regions, supposedly bringing eternal happiness to those who see it.

Guardian of the Sky[edit]

Ho-Oh is an avian pokémon resembling a phoenix and a peacock, but without an exorbitant tail. Its feathers are predominantly gold and red, with yellow tail-feathers, a white underside, and green feathers at the tip of its wings. Ho-Oh has a green stripe on its neck, a yellow beak, black rings around its red eyes, and a curly-feathered, yellow crest on its head. Ho-Oh's wings are prismatic, causing it to trail a rainbow behind it when it flies. It has darkly colored feet and legs with four toes and long talons.

Cosmology[edit]

Ho-Oh is the predominant pokemon of life in the Johto region. It is the master of the legendary beasts, having revived them when they perished in a dreadful fire. Thus, Ho-Oh has the mythical power to resurrect the dead. It is said the sacred fire of Ho-Oh, which is a brilliant burst of rainbow flames, will burn and destroy all that is impure, but restore that which is pure. Ho-Oh also is the origin of rainbows, making them wherever it flies. It is said to have a "heart of gold" and is the opposite to Lugia, who bears the "soul of silver."

History[edit]

700 years ago, two towers were built to represent friendship. They were the Tin and Brass towers, which stood on opposite ends of a city in the Johto region. Ho-Oh is said to have perched atop the bell tower on the Tin tower, whereas Lugia perched on top of the Brass. However, only 150 years ago, lightning struck the Brass tower and set it aflame. No one knows by what force of magic or fate this event occurred, but the raging flames claimed the Brass tower and it was burned to the ground. Lugia fled the city for a set of islands in the east of Johto. Ho-Oh, with its counterpart gone, no longer stayed stationary in the region. After it revived the three nameless pokemon who perished in the Brass towers destruction, it flew off, leaving a rainbow in the aftermath of the event. People say it now flies to find a trainer with a pure heart. No one is sure why.
