To the rugged, grassy southern highlands of Arvel, the resident lineage of ogre known as hill giants[1] is primarily comprised of palaeoloxodon and mammoth and like them they're surprisingly sure-footed for their size. They typically live in small family groups, with related women, rarely exceeding 4 meters tall, and children remaining in the same river valley generally while men, often exceeding 5 meters in height, are solitary and travel between groups. Thanks to being able to produce and receive infrasonic calls too deep for humans to hear, hill ogres regularly communicate with the highland mammoths and actually can serve as capable liaisons if one earns their friendship. This also lets them benefit from the infrasonic communication network of mammoths and drenduga, avoiding areas warned about or intercepting threats on the proboscideans' behalf. The uncanny effect that ogres of nothern Arvel have on sloths is not present between elephant and hill ogre, perhaps due to proboscideans' greater intelligence, although because they do not actually have genetics of mammoth or palaeoloxodon they don't express kinship with them. |
