Weapon (longsword), legendary (requires attunement)
An ancient longsword. When an enemy is killed with this weapon, the user can choose to capture their essence within a set of gems set in the pommel. This essence can be released during a long rest. Only four essences can be held within the Gripsoul at a time.
Different types of creatures have different effects:
- Abberation: the wielder becomes resistant to psychic and force damage
- Beast: adds an extra 1d6 to damage against humanoids
- Celestial: adds an extra 1d4 radiant damage, and allows the wielder to cast the cure wounds spell as if from a 3rd level spell slot once, which use is regained at dawn
- Dragon: adds 1d6 elemental damage based on the damage type of the original dragon
- Elemental: adds 1d6 based on the damage type of the elemental
- Fey: allows the wielder to shrink themselves as if using enlarge/reduce
- Fiend: gives the wielder advantage on Charisma checks against humanoids
- Giant: allows the wielder to grow themselves as if using enlarge/reduce
- Humaniod: adds an extra 1d6 to damage against non-humanoids
- Monstrosity: The wielder can cast fear twice, which uses are regained after one hour
- Ooze: adds 1d6 poison damage and causes strikes against enemies to rust metal
- Plant: the wielder can summon roots to restrain enemies as if casting entangle spell twice, which uses are regained after one hour
- Swarm: allows the wielder to occupy the space of another unit regardless of size
- Undead: adds 1d4 necrotic damage and heals the wielder for half the damage dealt
