Weapon (longsword), legendary (requires attunement)

An ancient longsword. When an enemy is killed with this weapon, the user can choose to capture their essence within a set of gems set in the pommel. This essence can be released during a long rest. Only four essences can be held within the Gripsoul at a time.

Different types of creatures have different effects:

Abberation: the wielder becomes resistant to psychic and force damage
Beast: adds an extra 1d6 to damage against humanoids
Celestial: adds an extra 1d4 radiant damage, and allows the wielder to cast the cure wounds spell as if from a 3rd level spell slot once, which use is regained at dawn
Dragon: adds 1d6 elemental damage based on the damage type of the original dragon
Elemental: adds 1d6 based on the damage type of the elemental
Fey: allows the wielder to shrink themselves as if using enlarge/reduce
Fiend: gives the wielder advantage on Charisma checks against humanoids
Giant: allows the wielder to grow themselves as if using enlarge/reduce
Humaniod: adds an extra 1d6 to damage against non-humanoids
Monstrosity: The wielder can cast fear twice, which uses are regained after one hour
Ooze: adds 1d6 poison damage and causes strikes against enemies to rust metal
Plant: the wielder can summon roots to restrain enemies as if casting entangle spell twice, which uses are regained after one hour
Swarm: allows the wielder to occupy the space of another unit regardless of size
Undead: adds 1d4 necrotic damage and heals the wielder for half the damage dealt
