Dragonfolly (5e Creature)
From D&D Wiki
Dragonfolly[edit]
Huge dragon, unaligned Armor Class 18 (natural armor)
Saving Throws Str +8, Dex +12, Con +9, Cha +6 Effulgent Feathers. A creature that touches the dragonfolly or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 7 (2d6) lightning damage. Deteriorating Form. Whenever the dragonfolly would regain hit points through any method aside from resting, it instead takes necrotic damage equal to the number of hit points it would have regained. Touch based healing spells require a melee spell attack, single-target ranged healing spells require a ranged spell attack, multitarget or area of effect healing spells require the dragonfolly to make a Wisdom saving throw, and thrown objects (such as potions of healing) require an improvised ranged weapon attack. Flyby. The dragonfolly doesn't provoke an opportunity attack when it flies out of an enemy's reach. Vitriolic Lightning (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). If the dragonfolly would be reduced to 0 hit points, its current hit point total is instead reset to 184 hit points, it recharges its Lightning Rush action, it immediately uses its Effulgent Wings legendary action option (without expending any actions), and it becomes coated in crackling red lightning for the next hour which, when the dragonfolly deals lightning damage, reduces lightning immunity to resistance, negates lightning resistance, and makes any creature who is not resistant or immune to lightning vulnerable. Additionally, the dragonfolly can use the options in the “Mythic Actions” section for 1 hour. ACTIONSMultiattack. The dragonfolly makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws. Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (1d10 + 8) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) lightning damage. Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d6 + 8) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) lightning damage. Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (1d8 + 8) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) lightning damage. Lightning Rush (Recharge 5-6). The dragonfolly flies up to its speed in a straight line, passing through the space of any creature one or more sizes smaller than it. When the dragonfolly moves through a creature's space, that creature must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 21 (6d6) lightning damage and is knocked prone. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isn't knocked prone. The dragonfolly's movement speed is then reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn, though it continues flying.
LEGENDARY ACTIONSThe dragonfolly can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragonfolly regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn. Detect. The dragonfolly makes a Wisdom (Perception) check. Mythic ActionsIf the dragonfolly's Vitriolic Lightning trait has activated in the last hour, it can use the options below as legendary actions. Spite Given Flesh. If the dragonfolly is reduced to 0 hit points it automatically activates this legendary action. The dragonfolly becomes immune to all damage except for damage through its Deteriorating Form feature, anything (features, actions, legendary actions, etc.) that deals lightning damage changes to deal fire damage instead (Fire damage does not benefit from the effects of Vitriolic Lightning reducing resistances or immunities), and when it uses its Murderswarm legendary action it removes one failed death saving throw. The dragonfolly must roll death saving throws each round at the end of its turn until it fails three. On the third failed death saving throw the dragonfolly finally succumbs and dies. |
Lore. Yharon, also known as the jungle dragon and the pheonix-dragon, is a true dragon with such overflowing life force as to rise from the grave a few days after dying, even if his body were picked clean and spread across the world. It is unknown how a portion of his body was obtained to create a clone, or even whether he is alive or dead (as the pheonix-dragon can only die when he recognizes a master, who is then slain before him), but somehow it has been done. The result is a dragonfolly, a lesser dragon overflowing with biomantic energy, literally unable to ever rest except in its final death. Description. Dragonfolly are huge lesser dragons with 4 purple faceted eyes like those of a bug, a pair of purple horns, 4 avian legs, 2 wings, a bird of prey's beak, a feather-duster tail, and incredibly fluffy feathers made of fine golden fibres. A dragonfolly constantly crackles with electricity, the overflowing life energy that fills their bodies spilling out through their soft, pseudo-metallic feathers as sparks. Dragonfolly stand 15 feet tall at the shoulders and are 28 feet long, their tails making up 15 feet of that length. They also have a 20-foot wingspan with wings that flap much slower than would be expected for them to provide lift, each beat sending peals of thunder through the air. Ecology. Dragonfolly find jungles and deserts, paradoxically, to be their preferred environments. Dragonfolly must eat to live, but absorb lifeforce so easily through food that they can quickly become overwhelmed, their bodies becoming cancerous, swelling up, and then exploding in a massive shower of electrified feathers, flesh and blood. Because of this, in jungles, they will consume food in large amounts, usually harvested by their bumblebirb spawn. The lifeforce they gain is then used to spawn a massive flock of bumblebirbs, all of whom are fanatical about the dragonfolly for as long as it lives, which will go out to gather food and keep any dragonfolly in the flock safe to create more bumblebirds. The infestation can become so large in just a few days that the flock blocks out the sun. Dragonfolly act not only as the "queen bee" of the flock, but also its guardian. They are incapable of sleeping and so are ever vigilant and capable of dealing huge damage. In deserts, dragonfolly are able to expend much more of their energy into the ground itself. Deserts that dragonfolly set up within will slowly become more and more lush, the sand and rock becoming fertile soil, plants that blow in through the breeze exploding in growth, and water building up in the environment and causing rainfall to happen much more frequently. Over the course of a few years it will become incredibly lush with a totally different environment but the surrounding area, miles away, will become desertified due to lack of rain. Eventually the dragonfolly will move on to one of those surrounding areas and repeat the process, the lush environment slowly shifting over and following the dragonfolly, the desert reclaiming the area left behind over the next few years. Lair. Usually a region will only have one dragonfolly, but they have been known to exist in groups as big as three. These dragonfolly will all be able to use their murderswarm ability for about an hour a day to create huge swarms of bumblebirbs. These bumblebirbs will rapidly cause an ecological disaster, but will also soon be discovered to be amazing meal replacements for all the local predators. Because of this the area around the dragonfolly's nest will be very different from normal. Animals live well past their normal age limit, and their children all grow up much faster than normal due to a diet of bumblebirbs, causing the population to swell in waves (bumblebirbs > animals > bumblebirbs > animals). In addition plants that are useful in the brewing of healing potions and regeneration potions become more abundant. Tactics. All dragonfolly will normally wait in ambush during the day when their bumblebirbs are asleep, either by burying or otherwise coating themselves in something, or by hanging from the side of a super tall tree or cliff or something. If a creature only kills one or two sleeping bumblebirbs it will leave it alone, but anything that heads further than the perimeter of the flock is a threat. Dragonfolly know they are very loud when they move, so they will wait very silently for you to get close and then lightning rush their target when it enters range, usually causing several bumblebirbs to explode as well. At night they fly alongside their flock of expendable living bombs and will attempt to get in range as quickly as possible to lightning rush past their prey. From there CR 10 dragonfolly will use its multiattack, attempting to grapple a large creature, or up to two medium or smaller creatures, in place of its claw attacks, and then use its beak to bite something else if its available. From there it will dash straight up with its prey and drop them from 240+ ft. in the air. If dropping the prey didn't work, it will grab and simply hold, using its tail instead of its multiattack. If grappling doesn't work it will multiattack and then fly behind cover 50-60 ft. away, rinsing and repeating till death. CR 15 dragonfolly will use their tail attack legendary action in addition to multiattack in order to deal as much damage as they can, spread between as many targets as possible, usually attempting to hit a bumblebirb when there are multiple of them around a target. It will then use its Effulgent Wings legendary action to launch feathers, again usually targeting at least one bumblebirb group around a target. Any creature who succeeds on the saving throw by 5 or more will become the main target of any following uses of Effulgent Wings, with every successive success meaning they are nailed that much harder when they fail. CR 22 dragonfolly will fight till it hits 0 as stated above, attempting to never end its turn next to an enemy, and trying to take out any bumblebirb groups to deal damage. After hitting 0 and activating Vitriolic Lightning the dragonfolly will change tactics, its eyes glowing red with hate and its mind becoming blinded with rage. It will attempt to get as close as it can and grapple creatures. It will then use Murderswarm to create bumblebirbs who will gather around the grappled creatures and then explode themselves. In the meanwhile, the dragonfolly will use its tail and very short distance lightning rushes to deal as much lightning damage as it can. When it finally hits 0 again it will become spiteful, grabbing whoever it can and flying up, and if it can't grapple anything, then it will simply continue attacking as hard as it can. Once it is reduced to 0 again it will activate Spite Given Flesh and proceed to first target any creature who has shown itself capable of healing, secondly any creature who is a spellcaster, and thirdly any creature who is close.
