I started running this adventure from Tales from the Yawning Portal and things started great. But last night my players, four level-8 characters, ran into a room with a CR 9 Humanoid (150ish HP, 18 AC, +5h & 12/19d) and 8 knights and were almost wiped in the first round. (I did manage two critical hits using homebrew rule critical hits deal weapon damage + max damage but still don't think they shoulda been too banged up)

Has anyone else ran this adventure? What was your party make up? How did you overcome this encounter?

Otherwise, I am really enjoying this adventure. I've ran 3-4 other pre-made adventures and don't care for them but this one is simple and creative about its obstacles.

I have not run this module yet (I want to), but according to the (infamously inaccurate) CR math, one CR 9 plus eight CR 3's is an absurdly deadly encounter for four level 8 PCs, to the point of consuming the entire XP budget for that day and still having some left over.

Thanks for doing the CR calculation. I wanted to but hadn't but yes, it is very inaccurate. They fought three CR 3 manticores which wasn't an issue. I do recommend the adventure though.
