Mounts for an Illithid Paladin[edit]

MorkaisChosen  12:31, 23 February 2008 (MST)[edit]

I'm considering a Mind Flayer Paladin of Freedom (actually, the idea was a Gestalt PoF // Duelist, which is how it can get the mount at less than ECL20) and I'm not sure what would be a thematically appropriate Special Mount. Any ideas?

I'd go with something that lives underground. The core underground creature that seems to be of the most appropriate strength (though still a little stronger than a typical paladin's mount) is the otyugh.

This thread is just asking for it...

Eiji, WHERE did you find that...?

MorkaisChosen 06:55, 24 February 2008 (MST)[edit]

Hell yeah. Sized-up Intellect Devourer would work, too...

Pretty sure I remember Illithids ride in the mouths of Purple Worms.

Found it in Arms and Equipment Guide. Illithids ride around in the mouth of Purple Worms and mentally control it.

While that might be the case, the typical paladin's mount is much, much weaker than a purple worm. The strongest standard paladin mounts are the warhorse and large shark, both at CR 2 before adding mount abilities. The purple worm is CR 12 before adding mount abilities.

Since its a paladin of freedom, it is not of the norm. Its mount can be any creature and make sense. But who wants their PC to be "normal"? I'd say since mind flayer society enslave the minds of such a variety of dumb creatures, mounting the shoulders of a uncommonly large evil goblinoid or large giant whose brain has been turned to mush by so much mind control would be a fun spin on pally mounts. You'd have a servant with the IQ of an animal.

Actually a mindslaved mount, as awesome as it is, seems to counter the idea of a paladin of freedom, I'd almost give that sort of domination to your LG illithid paladins.

But great ideas. And I shall have my players encounter the illithid blackguard on a beholder. :D

Anyone know which nbook Intellect Devourers are in?
