Discussion:Trying to create / finish a homebrewed class

Think someone could help with that?[edit]

I'm trying to make / finish a homebrewed class of sorts that I got the idea for from multiple locations. Neverwinter Nights 2 as one of them. A Spirit Eater class. Melee, unarmed, and using a few monk abilities. Notably the unarmed damage table that monks use. Their unarmed attacks, when lethal (Monk thing as well, I think) damage / rip away parts of the victims soul, assuming it has one in some manner. I'm trying to make this class balanced, so so far I've decided it'll have about 1D6 for hits HP per level, since as it levels it gains abilities to helpd the group based on the number of souls it has absorbed and such. So yeah, any ideas or suggestions?

Make is a monk subclass.

A monk's subclass is not a bad solution. Thinking about a monk who feeds on souls, I think that ki could be the spiritual power of the adversaries and your monk feeds himself to increase his powers and they perform his special abilities.

Subclasses are easier to do and you can take inspiration from subclasses invented by others. You can take a look at my monk subclasses that I created recently, maybe it can help you and if you have time you could give me advice on how to improve it and make it more balanced.

Not bad. Each certainly offer a lot of options for players.

My new creation, allows you to create a martial arts fighter with techniques and style of personal choice making your character unique even if in the same subclass.

I'll be honest I am a bit busy with other hobbies and checking on things. I didn't want to leave you hanging though. I like class options that allow diversification, though I am not sure if there are too many choices here?

Thanks for your sincere opinion. The multi choices of skills allow the player to create a fast fighter that does damage, or a tank fighter or a mix of the two. This allow the player to explore the same subclass several times. At first I thought it was a good idea, but you're probably right, too many choices do not conform to the dnd 5e system.

But I must also say that this subclass for me is a way of finding a solution to the monk's shortcomings and giving him an image of a true martial arts fighter. Where every attack have special thing like a spell. I'm not saying we should go back to 4e (that was too messed up) but a small choice of 3 - 4 moves can help and enhance the interaction of the player and his character in the role. This does not apply only to the monk but for all classes that have only one standard way of attack.
