You channel negative energy into your vision, allowing you to see how close other creatures are to death. You can gauge the state of a creature in this spell's area with a glance, learning if they are dead, actively dying, alive, or neither alive nor dead (such as an undead or construct).
As an action, you can focus intently on a creature within range to perform a heightened study of their vitality. When you do so, the target must make a Wisdom saving throw. If it fails, you learn that creature's current hit points, and whether or not it has any temporary hit points. Either way, the target learns that you have attempted to scour its lifeforce, and a chill goes down its spine (if it has one).
This spell cannot be used to glean information from creatures that are hidden from divination magic, such as one under the effects of Nondetection. Additionally, this spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.
