Wondrous item, legendary (requires attunement)

Dormant State

While the Cloak of Fluttering Shadows is in its dormant state, it has 4 base charges. The cloak gains additional charges equal to half of your Animal Handling or Nature modifier (whichever is higher), rounded up. The cloak regains 1d4 expended charges daily at dawn.

• Butterfly Summoning: As a bonus action, you can expend one or more charges to summon spectral butterflies at a center point of your choice within 30 feet of you. The center point can be yourself, another creature, or an object. The butterflies remain at a fixed distance of 3 feet from the center point, circling it at a normal pace. Each butterfly lasts for 10 minutes or until removed.

• Commanding Butterflies: As a bonus action, you can command one butterfly to attack a creature within 15 feet of the center point. The attack uses your spell attack modifier. If you do not have a spell attack modifier, use your Wisdom modifier instead. Roll 1d8 to determine the damage dice for the butterfly’s attack. The butterfly deals magical damage of the specified type on a hit.

• Removing Butterflies: Butterflies can only be removed by the wearer using a bonus action to dismiss them, or by the center point being teleported. If the center is teleported, the butterflies scatter in random directions, forcing all creatures within 15 feet of the center to make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC (or 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier if you do not have a spell save DC). On a failure, they take 1d4 magical force damage per butterfly; on a success, they take half damage.

• Dismissal Reaction: The wearer can use a reaction to dismiss all summoned butterflies, preventing the scatter effect.

Awakened State

When the Cloak of Fluttering Shadows reaches an awakened state, it gains the following benefits: • Increased Charges: The cloak now has a base of 6 charges, and the bonus charges from Animal Handling or Nature remain.

• Improved Recovery: The cloak regains 1d4 + 2 expended charges daily at dawn.

• Centered Attack: As an action, you can command all butterflies to attack their center point. The center must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC (or 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier if you do not have a spell save DC). On a failure, the center takes damage equal to the result of the d8 table plus one additional damage die (of the same type) per butterfly. On a success, the center takes half damage.

Exalted State

When the Cloak of Fluttering Shadows reaches an exalted state, it gains the following benefits: • Maximized Charges: The cloak now has a base of 10 charges, and the bonus charges from Animal Handling or Nature remain.

• Superior Recovery: The cloak regains 1d6 + 4 expended charges daily at dawn.

• Protective Intercept: When the center of the butterflies (e.g., a creature or object) is hit with an attack, the wearer or the center (if permitted by the wearer) can use a reaction to command a butterfly to intercept the attack. The butterfly is destroyed, and the attack misses the center.
