Weapon (any melee weapon that deals slashing damage), very rare (major) (requires attunement)

This weapon can draw from your life force to enhance blows dealt by it. This weapon has three states, which it progresses through as it is used and each which give it additional properties.

Dormant

While in the dormant state, this weapon has the following properties:

  • It has a +1 to attack rolls made with it.
  • As a bonus action while you are holding the weapon, you can channel your life force into it to enhance it subtly by expending hit die. For each hit die you expend in this way, your current and maximum hit points are reduced by the amount rolled on the hit die. The weapon gains a +1 to damage for every hit die drained into it this way. The bonus granted to the blade lasts for 1 hour and the reduction to your maximum hit points is recovered upon completion of a long rest. Your current and maximum hit points can't be reduced below 1 by this property, but you must have more than 1 hit point to expend hit die into the weapon.
Awakened

While in the awakened state, this weapon has the following properties:

  • The weapon's bonus to attack rolls increases to +2.
  • When you make an attack with the weapon, but before you make the attack roll, you can choose to reduce your hit points. The lost hit points are added to the damage roll of the attack if it hits. If it does not hit, the expended hit points are lost.
Exalted

While in the exalted state, this weapon has the following properties:

  • The weapon's bonus to attack rolls increases to +3.
  • As an action, you can choose to channel your life force into the weapon to deliver a single powerful strike. You lose a number of hit points of your choice and the blade begins glowing vibrant red, with the strength of the glow depending on how many hit points you have channeled into it. The next attack made with the weapon that hits deals extra damage equal to the hit points you put into the weapon. While these hit points are in the weapon and you hold it, you suffer none of the effects of being reduced to 0 hit points.
