Unlike normal ballistae, the Ballista of Chains is specifically designed to shoot down aerial creatures. This type of ballista is typically crafted by dwarves and gnomes, who combine their expertise in blacksmithing and mechanics to create a siege weapon capable of firing special enchanted projectiles. When these projectiles approach a target’s wings, they unfold, forming a massive network of chains with a specialized design that easily entangles the target, making escape significantly more difficult.

These projectiles are exclusive to this type of ballista and cost 250 gp (+250 gp for each size category extra starting on medium) each due to their complexity. The ballista can be adapted for any size category of these projectiles except Gargantuan.

Before it can be fired, it must be loaded and aimed. It takes two action to load the weapon, two action to aim it and one action to fire it.

Shot Down Shot: Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, range 120/480 ft., one target. Hit: When the projectile strikes accurately in the wing area, the chains automatically open and entangle the target. The creature must then make a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the creature loses all flying speed and fall to the ground, taking the appropriate falling damage. Additionally, it cannot use its wings to fly, attack, or perform any action that requires free movement of its wings.

A creature can remove the chain by making a successful DC 25 Strength or Dexterity check as an action.
