Oni[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

Though often mistaken for ogres in tales, Oni are slightly smaller in stature and possess a more natural muscular build. The color of their skin is determined by their lineage, which signifies the tribe they belong to. This can result in shades of red, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, white, and black.

Their eyes bear a beastly quality, with irises that range from shades of scarlet and yellow to even entirely bright white. The sclera, or the whites of their eyes, is typically jet black. Usually, dark or gray hair covers their bodies, and even the females have a coat of hair. However, pure white hair is not an uncommon sight, especially among the Pale or Black Oni.

Oni possess a pair of short ivory horns jutting from their foreheads, which lengthen as they age. Their teeth and claws are jet black. The length of their horns is a source of pride among the Oni, to the extent that even the most unkempt among them are known to polish their horns daily.

History[edit]

After the fall of Shuten-Dōuji and his son Kidōmaru, several Oni began to live isolated in underground or mountainous points. However, at some point in history, several tribes of Oni came together in the mountains to form a strong and protected civilization, seeking out any other Oni who were isolated to join them.

Over time, these Oni built monasteries that serve not only as a home, but also as a place to teach the art of controlling Black Chi, or Infernal Chi. Furthermore, like Monks, they are excellent martial artists and additionally, they are capable of controlling certain elements, depending on their Oni lineage. They came to call themselves Yama no Oni, or Oni of the Mountains.

Society[edit]

The way of life of these Oni is similar to that of Monks. They live in seclusion in the mountains, but do not deny interaction with other species, although this is something they do infrequently. Their society is made up of several Oni tribes that came together after the fall of Shuten-Dōuji, living peacefully. If an Oni within society does something that risks destroying society, it risks being expelled and having its horns cut off.
