Velox (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Velox[edit]
“ | The speed they run at is not technique. They are naturally capable. You should see their young ones. They literally give people a run for their money. | ” |
—Thassian Ul'Dartha, adventurer extraordinaire |
Physical Description[edit]
The velox appear to be humanoids that are naturally colored by running really fast through a rain of paint. Their forms are like that of humans. The skin pigment of a velox is what is most jarring. From birth, a velox is colored by a bizarre mix of colors. These colors appear almost smeared or quickly flicked all over their body, with a wide variety of mixes of hues and even tints. The eyes of a velox are similar, with most velox appearing heterochromic and having different colored irises from the sclera of their eyes. Their hair is no different, appearing naturally as wildly colored as a pubescent rebellious human teenager. When they move, these mixes of colors on their bodies are said to shift and create illusions on those who watch them. Velox are known to have incredible speeds, with strong legs, which augment this illusory effect.
History[edit]
The velox are believed to be humanoids touched by the same influences of fey that create quicklings. Their chaotic appearance is reminiscent of the whimsy and well-known chaos of the Positive Energy Planes. It is said that velox do not believe they die of age. Rather, over the course of their life, they simply get faster and faster, until they someday run and disappear into a speed beyond perception and never return. Some say velox are humanoids touched by the true powers of the Positive Planes, which renders them unstable and frenetic, thus explaining their bursts of speed.
Personality[edit]
Velox are naturally a bit selfish and self-occupied with their own goals and thoughts. While they do have groups, called flurries, they congregate solely out of individual interest, much like how a school of fish behaves. When danger subsides, or they have gotten what they wanted, velox rarely convene anymore. They are what they themselves like to call "too fast for friends." The velox are almost possessed by a need for speed and are constantly trying to better their own endurance to race to the world at the end of existence. They therefore tend to be fast friends and even faster enemies, as they view many things like relationships as ephemeral. Life is too short to smell roses and have commitments. This rarely earns them any favors. Some velox are able to tamp down on their zeal for speed and appreciate some things, however. There is an example of a velox who fell in love and was incredibly frustrated at how long and complicated courtship is.
Velox Names[edit]
Names to velox are more or less discardable things, like many things in their fast-moving life. They like fast names that don't take a lot of time to make up on the fly or remember. Thus, one second, they might be Zat, and the next, Unth. Those with a more grounded sense of the world who have learned to slow down a bit may settle on a single name for convenience's sake.
Male: Cor, Ux, Tern, Iyu
Female: San, Tan, Pak, Ley
Velox Traits[edit]
Really fast humans imbued with fey quickness
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2 and one other score of your choice increases by 1.
Age. Velox reach maturity around 20 and live up to about 60 usually before they reach the speed they so desire. However, those who live a slower life have been observed to live as long as 100 years of age.
Alignment. Most velox are very chaotic. They like to live fast and do as they please. Because they tend to be interested in their own affairs, they tend towards neutrality on everything else.
Size. Veloxs are nigh identical in terms of height compared to humans, as they typically range to just barely five feet to well over six feet in height. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.
Unchained. The mind of a velox is so fast that even enchantments have troubles holding their attentions for long. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed.
Inhuman Agility. Your reflexes and agility allow you to move with a burst of speed. When you move on your tum in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the tum. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you move 0 feet on one of your turns.
Blurring Speed. In battle, you can move with speed that dizzies opponents. As a bonus action, you can make a special movement with your dash. Until the end of your turn, all attacks have disadvantage against you. You cannot benefit from this effect if you do not move at least 5 feet with your special movement. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all use once you finish a long rest.
Born to Run. You have advantage on Constitution checks and saving throws against exhaustion incurred from running.
Show-Off. Velox are known to have playful tendencies and want to display their agile prowess often. You are proficient with the Performance skill.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice
