This page is where I'll be planning a update to the Marasmusine Meter (5e Guideline) and the Musicus Meter (5e Guideline) for the One D&D update to 5th Edition, which will be known as 5.5e. I will possibly have this be split into Backgrounds and Species, given that they are the two halves to the Character Origins in the 2024 PHB.

(Note, if this does get used, I'd prefer it to be called the Aurora-Marasmusine Meter given that it's more based on their old meter but updated for 5.5e)

Backgrounds[edit]

Backgrounds have the following features:

  • Three Abilities which could be increased
  • One Origin Feat
  • Two Skill Proficiencies
  • One Tool Porficiency
  • 50 GP worth of equipment, excluding Martial weapons and armour, OR 50 GP

This is explained in the 2024 DMG, so just as long as they follow these rules, they should remain balanced.

Species[edit]

There currently is no Feat Construction Kit for the 2024 rules, but I would use a similar system for the Species as the Marasumsuine Meter, where a Feat is worth 1 point. I will start by looking at each of the races and see what each gives.

Aasimar[edit]

  • Humanoid Creature Type
  • Small or Medium Size
  • 30ft Speed
  • Celestial Resistance (Resist Necrotic and Radient Damage) [2x Uncommon Resistances, 1pt]
  • Darkvision, 60ft [0.5pts]
  • Healing Hands (1/Long Rest healing skill) [Basically a 1/Long Rest Healing Word, so 0.33pts]
  • Light Bearer (Cantrip) [0.33pts]
  • Celestial Revelation (1 min Transformation at level 3, bonus damage plus 1 extra effect, 1/Long Rest) [0.5pts]

Dragonborn[edit]

  • Draconic Flight (10 min Transformation at Level 5, grants Flight speed, 1/Long Rest) [0.5]

Dwarf[edit]

  • Dwarven Resilience (Resistance to Poison damage, plus Advantage against Poisoned saving throws) [0.5]

  • Stonecunning (Grants limited Tremorsense for 10 minutes, Proficiency Bonus/Long Rest) [0.5pts]

Scoring System[edit]

30 feet walking speed is the base

Superior Traits (1pt)[edit]

  • Common Damage Resistance (Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeoning or Fire)
  • Feat or equivalant Trait
  • Darkvision, 120ft
  • Advanced Transformation
  • Natural Flight Speed (up to 20ft)

Major Traits (0.5pts)[edit]

  • Darkvision, 60ft
  • Saving Throws (CON/WIS/DEX)
  • Skill Expertise
  • Crit/Fumble effect with reasonable effects which wouldn't be similar to a Perk
  • Special Attack or Normal Transformation
  • Uncommon Damage Resistance (Any damage type barring Common ones and Poison)
  • Poison Resistance & Advantage to Poisoned Saving Throws combined
  • Nimbleness (Movement through spaces with a creature larger than you)
  • Increased Carring Capacity (EG counting as one size larger)

Minor Traits (0.33pts)[edit]

Lesser Traits (0.25pts)[edit]

  • Walk Speed +5ft
  • Climb/Swim Speed +10ft (up to the species' Walk Speed)

  • Flight Speed +5ft (after the base 20ft from Natural Flight Speed)

Negative Traits[edit]

Negative traits are only to be included for flavor and balancing. The following traits could be added, but only to offset part of the cost of a linked trait:

  • Damage Vulnerability (Uncommon) - -0.25pts. Must be paired with a Damage Resistance of Uncommon or higher.
  • Flight Height Cap - -0.5pts for 10ft. Can only be used to offset an increased Flight Speed.
  • Walk Speed -5ft - 0.25pts. Can only be used to offset an increased Speed of another kind.

Versatility[edit]

If a trait grants a lot of versatility, such as Human's ability to pick any proficiency they want and Origin Feat they want, then the skill gets a 20% boost to their score. As such, a Superior Trait would score 1.2, a Major Trait would score 0.6 and a Minor Trait would score 0.4

EXCEPTION: If a trait allows for the choosing of Damage Resistances and at least 4 options are accessable, if exactly one of the choices are considered Common, then it is worth 1pt.
