Tonfa, Variant (5e Equipment)
TonfaSimple Melee Weapons
Tonfa. This simple melee weapon consists of a 24” to 26” long hardwood club. It has a side handle protruding at approx. 1/4 its length. When used by a wielder proficient with martial weapons or a Monk, against a small- or medium-sized humanoid creature, attempts to grapple the creature are made with advantage. As a finesse weapon, the wielder may opt to use either a Strength (Athletics) or a Dexterity (Acrobatics) check for the contested grapple attempt. A successful grapple attempt results in the target creature being grappled and restrained, as the tonfa is used as a restraining device. The tonfa is not usable as a weapon until the grapple is released. A Monk may use a tonfa as a defensive tool by using his reaction to deflect a melee weapon attack which causes slashing or bludgeoning damage, increasing his armor class by +2 for that attack. A wielder who is not proficient with martial weapons and is not a Monk may use a tonfa as a standard club without penalty. Such a wielder who attempts to utilize the grapple feature does so without advantage, and must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or fumble and drop the tonfa. If the saving throw fails by 5 or more, the wielder also takes 1d4 bludgeoning damage. (Attached photo obtained from southernpoliceequipment.com on 08/23/2022).
