Brief Description[edit]

The Staffheads are a number of magical objects designed to work in tandem with The Staff of Ways, each with its own unique abilities and effects. They are the product of many years of research and labor, the collective magnum opus of a highly skilled sage. Though The Staff of Ways is able to be used without a staffhead, its power and utility can increase greatly with one.

Crafting Staffheads[edit]

To create a Staffhead, you must first be proficient with either gemwright's tools or the Intelligence (Arcana) skill. Whenever you finish a long rest, you can make a DC 16 Intelligence (Arcana) check to attempt to magically transform a nonmagical gemstone you touch into a staffhead. On a failure, the gemstone is consumed but you fail to create a staffhead. On a success, the gemstone is consumed and you are able to create the staffhead. The staffhead will have a pair of traits associated with the type of gem used, with more powerful gems having better traits.

Creating a staffhead requires you to have both gemwright's tools and a nonmagical gemstone on your person, and any staffhead you create will retain its magical properties indefinitely.

Using a Staffhead[edit]

To use a staffhead, it must first be connected to either The Staff of Ways or any nonmagical staff that does not have a knob on the end. To connect to a staffhead to The Staff of Ways, you need only say its name whilst holding the staff in one hand and the staffhead in the other. To connect a staffhead to any other type of staff, you spend a short or long rest focusing only on the staff and the staffhead. A staffhead can only be connected to one staff at a time, and a staff can only be connected to one staffhead at a time. To disconnect the staffhead, you only need to will it. Once you connect a staffhead to a staff, you will become attuned to it. When you disconnect the staffhead from its staff, you will no longer be attuned to it.

Each staffhead has a Minor and Major trait that is only active once it has been connected to a staff. When connected to The Staff of Ways, both of these traits are active and able to be used. When connected to any other type of staff, however, only the Minor trait will be active and able to be used.
