Talk:Wukong (5e Race)

I'm unsure about the Power Incarnate cantrip choice of thaumaturgy. I know in lore Wukong could manipulate effects like the cantrip suggests. The cosmetic part, however, I feel, makes minor illusion a more appropriate choice. Or even prestidigitation since that can color something.--Yanied (talk) 09:08, 1 February 2020 (MST)

I felt that thaumaturgy was a good option for this variant. Sun Wukong and the thousands of knock-offs he inspired was very strong and often let that strength seep out into the world in massive displays of power (the most obvious example of this of course being Son Goku and everything in Dragonball). I feel like minor illusion would not be a bad option for the Wukong, though. Perhaps create another variant, one more suited to casters? Sun Wukong had a lot of powers. In the original iteration of the Wukong, the abilities focus on how he was agile and playful, with a touch of his trickster nature. The first variant focuses on his strength and the shows of power he would frequently put on. I don't feel like minor illusion quite captures those same results. But another variant could emphasize how he often utilized magic. Maybe make one with a primary mental ability (intelligence would probably be the most appropriate, followed by charisma), and the minor illusion cantrip would fit in with a lot of what he did. Replace his climb speed with a fly speed (utilizing the winds as Sun WUkong often did), and replace some of his other abilities with new ones that reflect some of his magic powers. He was known to be able to unlock doors and chests by pointing at them, maybe we replicate the Knock spell a little? He could also paralyze his enemies (which would probably be a little strong), shapeshift, clone himself, summon creatures, detect evil and create barriers. Obviously all of this would be far too much to give a player race, but there's a lot to work with here.

Actually now that I've written all that, I have a few ideas floating around my noggin'. If anyone wants a magic-focused Wukong, mention it here and I'll see if I can create one. --JohnnyWhoa (talk) 09:49, 1 February 2020 (MST)
