Talk:Vuthra, Chosen Ascendant (5e Creature)
Creator Here[edit]
Vuthra is a PC of mine that I adapted to be a 20th level Barbarian for a one-off (he's a Warlock in-game). I converted the weapon and traits across as best as I could without treading into PC Class territory too hard. The traits are probably out of left field, though, and that's because the subclass I used is Homebrew that we're needing to playtest. It's 100% Far Planes based and seemed the perfect fit for Vuthra as he gained power and knowledge from his masters. The concept of the subclass is more of a subversive, defensive type of warrior. Your physical form shifts as you become more and more connected with the Far Realms. I used the lore from the Forgotten Realms wiki for inspiration on the abilities. Most of them didn't come across in Vuthra's entry simply because they would be too strong, I think. What PCs can use to kill multiple creatures is just balanced poorly when used against them.
- The "Magic Resistance" is the subclasses 3rd level feature. In the face of Bear Totem and Berserker's third attack, it doesn't seem too strong.
- "Fold Across the Layers" is a play on the multilayered dimensional spacing the Far Realms consists of.
- "Melting Form" is a defensive use of a reaction, the counterpart to the Berserker's.
- "Aberrant Strike" is actually the capstone subclass ability. When you use Reckless Attack and hit, the target is vulnerable to all the attack's damage. You can use this a number equal to your Intelligence modifier, min 1, per long rest. Using the all of them before taking a long rest grants a level of exhaustion.
- "Terrorize" is an action made from the weapon itself just like a Mace of Terror.
- The massive extra damage on feared targets was an idea given to me by a friend when I was making the weapon. We do a list of magic items by rarity when making one-off characters and I was creating one by logically piling abilities into his weapon. I wanted something like keen, either more crit damage or a larger crit range. On top of the +1 it had and the rare mace of terror ability, adding keen was an odd teetering point. By 5e standards, the total weapon could be either a very rare but at the higher end of the price range or legendary if it was an intentionally weak item in that rarity. Vital Strike category damage on a frightened target fit the feeling of the character and weapon completely, so it stuck.
