Talk:Swashbuckler, Lord Dhazriel Variant (3.5e Class)

From D&D Wiki

This is a good variant... Especially considering a 3-level dip into it doesn't look especially different for anybody who did so with the WOTC version (and now wants to retcon this variant into their build, like I did with my major villain NPC). -- Mythos 15:33, 30 June 2009 (MDT)

Editing[edit]

I would help edit this page to get it finished, however, out of respect for Lord Dhazriel's wishes, I'll let him do it. -- Mythos 18:50, 30 June 2009 (MDT)

You know, if you want, I can adapt various Smart, Dedicated, and Charismatic-type talents from d20 Modern to fully flesh-out this class's style features, assuming Dhazriel allows me to... -- Mythos 15:45, 1 October 2009 (MDT)

Balance[edit]

the twentieth level ability is way OP, since the keen effect stacks with real keen, and you can increase the crit multiplier. if you pick both abilities and use a keen rapier, you get a 10-20/x3 crit range, then you put whatever burst abilities on it. now every other attack (take power critical alot to you always confirm) you ad 2d8 dmg per +2 bonus and the normal d6 from the flaming property or whatever. i cant think of any way to make a 10-20 crit balanced, anyone else has on please post. other than that it seem like a well balanced class, about equal to a rogue/swashbuckler with the multiclass feat (losses a few SA dice, gets a couple more bab and improved evasion, wich is about fair far as i can see). How is a 10-20 crit range overpowered? Being able to slay anyone with necromantic death spells still seems a lot more overpowered to me... -- Mythos 15:37, 1 September 2009 (MDT)

why does everyone bring up rouges and wizards when talking about balance for a fighter-type class? balance needs to be compared to a similar class, saying fighter sucks since it isnt wizard with all bullshit spells is a dumb argument, same can be said of anything that isnt wizard or other caster. Also remember fighter variants are sustained damage not "I can do this 4 times a day" casters with instant death spells. Tivanir 09:30, 21 March 2012 (MDT)

Suggestions[edit]

First, I think you should expand the swashbucking abilities to any weapon that can be finessed, it makes sense. Second, I like the cap stone abilities, they are versatile, but maybe they should only get one of them. Other than that, good class. A bit on the powerful side, but that appears to be intended. --Ganre 19:16, 29 November 2010 (MST)

Rating[edit]

Power - 4/5 I give this class a 4 out of 5 because your variant is over powered with to many too many awesome class features. I suggest removing some of them and weakening others e.g. limiting the level twenty class feature to a smaller group of weapons or replacing it with the final steps of a level scaled class feature like most classes. Also I would like to see some of the class features that made the original a desirable class, but I would only add them if you weakened the class considerably.

Wording - 5/5 I give this class 5 out of 5 because <<<it's well worded with a nice amount of fluff. If I had to improve something it would be the fact that there are a few grammatical errors in your paper

Formatting - 5/5 I give this class a 5 out of 5 because the only problem is the top where the money and health are located. It's a little messed up, but since I can't even make a class in the program this site makes you use it doesn't bother me this is just something you might improve.

Flavor - 5/5 I give this class a 5 out of 5 because I love the idea of the swashbuckler in general, and I over all like what you've done with it. Also you as previously stated I enjoyed your fluff.
