Challenge Rating?[edit]

Thirty was a very roundabout number and mostly just meant to be a placeholder. I'm honestly not sure what this things' rating should be. Any insight? Criticism is also welcome, provided it's done in legible English (no 1337speak, please). Uvū the Realm 07:17, 5 September 2007 (MDT)

I do not think anyone here speaks l33tspeak, however I have asked a few people to try to help figure out a good CR for this beastie. I hope this ends up helping. --Green Dragon 21:31, 5 September 2007 (MDT)
Much obliged to you and your mates. Uvū the Realm 23:43, 5 September 2007 (MDT)
CR 40ish. Please add some DCs to the creature saves. I'll think about this over the day.--Dmilewski 05:54, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
Okay, how's that? Forgive my poor penmanship, by the way. My ability to think about ideas is greatly superior than my ability to put it into the proper D&D format. I'm mostly just cannibalizing the layout from various sourcebooks and hoping it works out. Uvū the Realm 07:48, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
I'll start by saying I have little experience with epic beyond theoretical -- take that as a disclaimer for some of my comments.
  • A Con of 40 does not have a +1 bonus for HP ;). Also include epic toughness.
  • Outsider does not give d12s for Hit Dice. On that same note, check base attack bonus and saves.
  • How is the AC 31? Make sure to show the modifiers.
  • Under Special Qualities, resistances are not +5 they should be 5 (minor thing). Spell resistance should not be variable -- if you want it that way add in some rules text. What is "additional tentacle rake +6"?
  • I didn't count, but make sure you have enough feats for an 80 HD monster
  • If Rotting Constriction doesn't allow a save, this creature will not have a fair CR whatever you set it at most likely. See it could be set at 40, but if it takes multiple rounds to take it down, you can expect a couple characters to die. If you set it higher, it will be killed in one round. Basically, it will either kill a character or be killed on one round. With the epic spell Momento Mori, it really could be 2 characters.
  • Superpseudo Aura and Essence Siphon should be Fortitude saves.
  • Spell like abilities seem fine.
This creature looks awfully close in power to a Xixecal (perhaps slightly weaker due to lack of immunities) -- that is if you fix up the saving throw issues on the abilities. If you do that, a correct CR would likely be around the 30 you originally set it at (well somewhere between 30-35). --Aarnott 09:14, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
I knew making an epic monster would be a hastle. I find a cool picture online and pump it full of confusing crap that it can't possibly need. Thanks for the help Aarnott, everyone. I'll substitute those corrections (hopefully I'll do it right) and promise to stick with monsters below a 19 CR from now on. Uvū the Realm 09:49, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
I wouldn't so much say avoid making epic creatures -- practice makes perfect with any D&D designing. I like the background and theme to this monster. As far as flavor and such goes, it looks like published material. All it needs is the stats worked out, and it'll make a good beast. Now one thing I wonder (I have no Far Realm magazines or books) is whether this should be an Aberration. I think that type would be more suitable. --Aarnott 10:05, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
Well, according to the copy of Dragon that I have and the Pseudonatural Creature template as displayed in the Epic Handbook, they are Outsiders because, on their home plane, they're as normal as humans are on the Material Plane. But you're right, very little info has been published on Far Realm dinizens so most of it is left up to player interpretation. In fact, I'm wondering if "Superpseudo" shouldn't be a template, but I don't think I have a strong enough grasp on the rules for that undertaking. Uvū the Realm 10:13, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
I believe I've worked out the kinks you specified, Aarnott, and rounded the CR off to 34. My goal right now is to figure out how hotlinks around here work, because I know there is a page for the Pseudonatural Creature template, but the double-bracket trick is eluding me. Uvū the Realm 10:58, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
The double brackets do not always work -- they are redirects that users have made to make it more convenient to link to pages. Problems can occur with ambiguity such as shield (spell or item). If you see an unambiguous thing that does not have a double bracket link, you can make the redirect by creating the link such as Pseudonatural Creature on a page (like what I did here), click on the red link to edit the page, and then fill the content in with: #REDIRECT SRD:Pseudonatural Creature (Epic Template). Then the link will correctly redirect. You just have to make sure to find the correct page and fill in the REDIRECT with the page heading. If you don't want to do that (or it would be ambiguous and you are not sure), you can make a link to the page like this SRD:Pseudonatural Creature (Epic Template) or fill in the text used for the link like this Pseudonatural Creature. Edit this page to see the wiki code I used, then try to make your own redirect if you want.
Oh and on second look remove the save from the Rotting Constriction. My bad on that one... Still lame with a stupidly high grapple check in my opinion... But make sure to follow the template -- just off the bat I saw a +35 natural armor bonus. Oh and spell resistance of 5 times HD, which would be 400, which would mean this creature may be in the 40s for CR. --Aarnott 11:16, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
Thanks loads for the help, Aarnott. I hope this isn't too much of an inconvenience. If you happen to need help with anything let me know, although after taking a look at some of your prestige classes I don't know what I could do besides...maybe...rephrase with large, convoluted words. Uvū the Realm 11:33, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
Not a problem for the help. I like seeing good ideas be the best they can be. Comments on any of my contributions would be awesome, but that goes for anybody here -- we all like to see constructive criticism. Oh, and I saw you tried to make the REDIRECT. You missed the braces around the link. Basically edit this page so you can copy the wiki code: #REDIRECT SRD:Pseudonatural Creature (Epic Template). That is as opposed to this wiki code: #REDIRECT SRD:Pseudonatural Creature (Epic Template). The wiki can be daunting at first, but I think it creates a much more rich and powerful reference guide. --Aarnott 11:52, 6 September 2007 (MDT)

Protection[edit]

I would like to request that this page be protected from editing by anyone but myself. Thank you. Uvū the Realm 13:15, 6 September 2007 (MDT)

Ah... Thats actually not possible on a wiki... Either it can be edited by anyone, edited only by sysops, or edited only by registered users. Would you still like this protected, and if so to what degree (only users, or only sysops)? --Green Dragon 15:00, 6 September 2007 (MDT)
Well I suppose something is better than nothing, right mate? Registered users is fine, and thank you. Uvū the Realm 00:35, 7 September 2007 (MDT)
Hello Uvū the Realm. I have added the protection for the page, so only registered users can edit it. I am sorry that this wiki does not have the ability to lock pages for just one user, however I have heard through the grape vine that in a few releases MediaWiki might support it. — Blue Dragon (talk) 09:29, 8 September 2007 (MDT)
I wonder how that will work... :P. --Green Dragon 16:19, 8 September 2007 (MDT)
