Talk:Sunken Rlyeh (5e Environment)

Since Lovecraft uses non-euclidean erroneously to refer to shapes unnatural to the normal world, I think the word "alien" might work. They are kind of like designs we cannot imagine or build, so "unnatural," "eldritch," "unfathomable" also work. Maybe there is also a math term here, like "irrational" or something which could work, or even "imaginary" in reference to numbers beyond our understanding. Non-euclidean does have a nice ring to it though, hehe. IDK, tell me what you think.--Yanied (talk) 09:25, 12 November 2020 (MST)

I like all of those. There ought to be room for all of them, along with horrid and disturbing... It has been tough describing something that I can't even imagine, and I think it would be tough for any DM to work with it, assuming anybody even uses any of this. So the more vague but horrifying descriptors we can provide, the better, I suppose.

On another note, I'm struggling with the formatting of the first encounter table. I can't seem to get rid of an extraneous "2" just above the table. Any ideas? --Dain (talk) 11:28, 12 November 2020 (MST)

Fixed it :) --Yanied (talk) 19:34, 12 November 2020 (MST)
Thank you. I've added the deep water encounter tables as a separate supplement. I'll move on to the Rlyeh tables next. Also thanks for the edits to the Vision section. --Dain (talk) 20:20, 13 November 2020 (MST)
Cool. I'll pop in when I can, but this looks neat.--Yanied (talk) 20:35, 13 November 2020 (MST)

Cthulhu and the GOOs[edit]

Should there be a separate section for the great old ones sleeping? Like a temple or something dedicated to them?--Yanied (talk) 08:49, 1 December 2020 (MST)

I was/am hoping that others who have submitted Chtulhu material in the past have already run Cthulhu-based campaigns, and have developed dungeons or encounters that could be used in Rlyeh with little or no modification. Even if it's something that hasn't been typed up and ready to paste in, one room or encounter that is particularly fun and interesting could be submitted rather easily I think. I'm discouraged at this point that you and an anonymous user who offered some suggestions are the only ones to show any interest. I really do appreciate your inputs and contributions.
So yes, I agree that it would be very cool to have some details fleshed out for at least some of the locations in the table, especially temples or chapels where the servants of Cthulhu would be found. I envision that there would be many of these temples in Rlyeh, and if there were even just a few of them detailed out, it would be a great addition to the environment. I don't have anything on hand though, not having ever done anything with Rlyeh other than this effort (yet).
In theory, there could be a section with links to detailed descriptions, and the locations table could also link to the appropriate supplement page(s), so a DM doing a random generated adventure in Rlyeh could pop over to the relevant detailed encounter when the fates dictate...

Assuming that all these cities have similar structures in Lovecraft, I'm not sure if they have a lot of temples, or just one main one. In Mountains of Madness, there are (if I read it correctly) "principal temples" dedicated each to a major deity. In The Mound I think it was similar as well. I'm not sure if they would have many temples to Cthulhu or one primary temple for proper reverence, and maybe some sort of cradle temple for the sleeping gods Cthulhu watches over.
And, don't worry about it. People probably have had experience with Call of Cthulhu the game for sure. I'm 80% sure that people on the wiki are just more willing to collaborate on things like classes or something haha.--Yanied (talk) 18:36, 1 December 2020 (MST)
