The melee attack that's part of the spell needs to be defined as either a melee weapon attack or a melee spell attack. Additionally, the spell describes ".. the blade flares up.." yet there is no reference to having to target a blade, or yourself, or that it creates a blade, or other such things.
For wording as to attack spells with instant duration, referencing similar wording as to the spells from the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide (green flame blade and booming blade) will provide additional clarity to the reading.
The extra damage from higher levels is too high, none of the early damage spells increase by 2d6 (aside from scorching ray, which rather than just increasing damage provides another ray that you must hit with). Ideally, the spells damage should increase by 1d6, to keep it in line with other spells.--Kahz (talk) 00:56, 9 October 2016 (MDT)
